Goodreads asked Saleem Little:

What’s the best thing about being a writer?

Saleem Little It makes you aware of how multi-dimensional you are and how much we evolve daily, monthly and yearly. Often times I read old books as if I'm not the author, as if I don't recognize the thoughts and words. This is because, I'm no longer the same person who wrote the stories in his twenties so often I read what appears to be the works of a stranger. Heraclitus said: "No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it's not the same river and he's not the same man."

Outside of having documented evidence of your growth as an individual and connection to all sentient beings is the release of any negative thoughts and the spreading of positive ones. (Depending on your genre of course).
