Are the events that inspired Sour Lake known and passed down from generation to generation by the people who have lived resided in East Texas over the decades?

Bruce McCandless III Yes and no. I spent a lot of time in East Texas growing up, and certain elements of the story--the creepiest aspects, really--reflect the legends and oil-field tales I heard when I was young. On the other hand, Sour Lake references some very disturbing racist acts that took place in East Texas in the early 20th Century, and I suspect some of those incidents aren't as well known and remembered as they should be.
