Waiting for inspiration is not always an effective way to write. The best way is to just sit down and see what happens. I admit, however, that when I am about to begin a major project I prepare/procrastinate by clearing my desk, finishing annoying little tasks that could distract me, and making sure that my calendar is clear. There's nothing worse than being in the flow of writing and having to interrupt it to go to a meeting somewhere. I dislike meetings even at the best of times, but that is a recipe for a wasted day.
