Although technically not a "couple", I think I have to go with Annie Wilkes and Paul Sheldon from Stephen King's Misery. Paul's relationship with the delusional, obsessed #1 fan is one of the most haunting I've ever read and sticks with me to this day. Is this because, as an author, I can relate to their dynamic on some level? Perhaps. I've had my share of readers claiming to be my #1 fan. Even though I haven't had the pleasure of meeting any of them in person, I would be foolish to believe their obsession could never reach such a height. Only time will tell.
