What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Ricardo Sanchez Give up. Seriously. If writer weren't a compulsion for me, I would probably be a happier guy because I could spend more time watching movies or playing video games. But, if you really must write, then develop a thick skin. I sent my first novel to every agent who represented mysteries and got across the board "no thanks." But I still managed to get published anyway. That isn't to say I didn't take some, or even a lot, of their advice, but I never took criticism as a reason to give up.
