I have always loved Benny and Jack in Maeve Binchy's Circle of Friends. They fall in love with the essence of each other rather than who or what they are. Despite setbacks and disasters, they manage to hold onto their dignity and untimately their friendship. The ending leaves it up to the reader's imagination to decide their fate - personally, I have always believed that they finally marry and have two beautiful children. Such is the power of their personalities that I cared enough about them to imagine them living happily ever after.
