Literature is so vast that a question like this is almost impossible to answer. In the context of 21st Century English language fiction, however, I will say Kyell Gold's fox, Volle, and his white wolf partner, Streak. No doubt this will leave mainstream readers in the dark, but all I can say is "read about them." Most particularly in the context of Pendant of Fortune, their devotion to each other is absolute and unwavering. While I'm not a great fan of erotica, and Gold's writing contains a lot of it, these two characters are powerfully drawn and yet believable. Volle in particular may have many flaws, but his relationship to Streak raises him above that and makes him a crusader for truth and light. This is a concept that goes back the Medieval literature and beyond it even to Classical myth and legend, embodied in modern anthropomorphic characters.
