Some people think I was born in a barn. Sometimes I wish it were true. My love for animals has always been a predominant influence in my life, art, and writing. For anyone curious about my "real" life, I'm a professional librarian, and have worked in various areas of that field for over 40 years. Yes, Altivo Overo is a pseudonym that I use specifically to identify my anthropomorphic writing. That is, fiction in which animals think and speak as humans. It's an old field of writing that is finding new life, and I'd encourage you to look at the work of my fellow writers as well. We all have different approaches to an ancient idea. ...more

In the context of 21st Century English language fiction, however, I will say Kyell Gold's fox, Volle, and his white wolf partner, Streak. No doubt this will leave mainstream readers in the dark, but all I can say is "read about them." Most particularly in the context of Pendant of Fortune, their devotion to each other is absolute and unwavering. While I'm not a great fan of erotica, and Gold's writing contains a lot of it, these two characters are powerfully drawn and yet believable. Volle in particular may have many flaws, but his relationship to Streak raises him above that and makes him a crusader for truth and light. This is a concept that goes back the Medieval literature and beyond it even to Classical myth and legend, embodied in modern anthropomorphic characters.(less)

Risk to public education

The quality of public education in the US has been declining for years. One has only to look at literacy levels in the general population or among high school graduates to see this. As a retired librarian I can tell you that requests from high school and college students for audio or video formats of their basic textbooks and assigned readings were increasing rapidly even twenty years ago.

Clever setting but trite behavior and timeline. Strong characters who seem to be unable to control their libido, despite intellect and experience. I'd prefer to see more imaginative solutions. ...more

Interesting characters, but too many to keep track of in my opinion. The dogs are great but very much in the background here.

Pleasant enough for the most part, with good characters overall and a satisfying conclusion. On the other hand, this one is more melodramatic than the first in the series, and enough so to strain one's credibility. Favorite characters Wally and Dakot ...more
