Probably Lizzy and Mr. Darcy from "Pride and Prejudice." The brilliant development of their relationship is beautifully written and should be taught as a template for how to draw the reader, body and soul, into a story.
A close second is Dr. Yuri Zhivago and Lara Antipova in "Dr. Zhivago" by Boris Pasternak. Set against the tumultuous backdrop of the Russian Revolution, the relationship is masterfully developed and ultimately, is just absolutely heart wrenching. Every relationship has drama, much of which is created by the choices of the two characters. But when larger events impose drama on a relationship, (such as an entire country in upheaval) it captures our hearts and imaginations to the fullest.
