This is an easy question for me to answer, but it may sound cliche. Romeo and Juliet are by far my favorite fictional couple. The depth of their situation and passionate love for one another that ultimately leads to their tragic demise. Even as I sit here thinking about the story, my heart aches for them.
In my novels, the characters are placed in various scenarios that test their boundaries, love and human nature. I personally feel a story is enhanced when the characters, couples and players have a deeper level of persona expressed through the plot line of the story.
