“USA healthcare is a really expensive version of the free UK National Health Service (NHS) that provides a comparable level of service to all UK citizens.”

“When I was hired to work at the Kitt Peak National Observatory (KPNO), it was not disclosed to me that the site was being hit by powerful sonic booms from military supersonic aircraft that would shake the buildings. I had noticed that there seemed to be a significant number of staff that were having heart issues and some appeared to have had heart attacks and died prematurely. I later discovered during researching my own heart issues that it was a suspected effect of exposure to sonic booms. Regular exposure to sonic booms from military supersonic jet aircraft is suspected of increasing the incidence of vibroacoustic disease, a thickening of heart tissue which may lead to heart arrhythmia or premature death.”

“I made the mistake of taking a past girlfriend up to Kitt Peak National Observatory to fill the instrument cryostat with liquid nitrogen. It was one of the largest cryostats at the facility and took a long time to fill. The entire time there was a huge plume of cold nitrogen gas coming out of it, visible for several feet. After we were finished, she started complaining of feeling sick to the point that she thought she was going to vomit. It lasted for several hours. A few years later she started showing signs and symptoms of fatigue and depression and was being medically treated for it. I always felt guilty that I exposed her to the nitrogen gas, as I had no idea how toxic it was because I had never been sent on an OSHA approved cryogenic liquid training course.”

“By the time I left Kitt Peak National Observatory, I had formed the opinion there was a cover-up culture there.”

“Kitt Peak National Observatory was infested with rodents. There were so many that rodent traps were in daily use there.”

“The only workplace that prevented a health and safety visit from occurring during my career was professional astronomy. They were adamant that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) were not going to be allowed to visit the Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona, USA. They were successful in canceling the scheduled OSHA visit and the result was I became much sicker as time progressed while working there. Part of that sickness was suspected mercury poisoning.”

“Some might respond to the last point by claiming that, despite the obviously finite magnitude of both the human and nonhuman resources used by government forces, national defense nevertheless does represent equal protection for all in the sense that there is a perpetual commitment to resist aggression against any part of the nation. But that is false, and the American Civil War is clear evidence of this error in reasoning. Union forces would have done nothing to protect the Confederate states if, say, the government of France had attacked them. Instead, the French would have been viewed as allies in the subjugation of the Southern "traitors.” Intervention from abroad would only have been resisted by the North if it was accompanied by a demand that the Southern states, once defeated, would become a possession of that foreign power. And one cannot escape by claiming that the Confederacy was viewed as a separate nation and therefore was not owed protection. The North consistently maintained that the Confederacy was an unlawful entity along the lines of a criminal gang, not a sovereign nation. In short, governmental protection against aggression is never guaranteed, but instead may change with political conditions. In no sense, then, does national defense necessarily imply equal protection for all areas and all persons. True defense, though its effects may be widespread, is microeconomic in nature.”

“Superficially, this nationally marked literature is subsumed by the terms of both the universal and the global. Considered part of anglophone science fiction because British, Scottish science fiction is thus 'universal,' but as 'not English', it perversely cannot rise to the level of the 'global'.”
