“Shapeshifting requires the ability to transcend your attachments, in particular your ego attachments to identity and who you are. If you can get over your attachment to labeling yourself and your cherishing of your identity, you can be virtually anybody. You can slip in and out of different shells, even different animal forms or deity forms.”

“The material world is all feminine. The feminine engergy makes the non-manifest, manifest. So even men (are of the feminine energy). We have to relinquish our ideas of gender in the conventional sense. This has nothing to do with gender, it has to do with energy. So feminine energy is what creates and allows anything which is non-manifest, like an idea, to come into form, into being, to be born. All that we experience in the world around us, absolutely everything (is feminine energy). The only way that anything exists is through the feminine force.”

“Minutes passed by. A little blue butterfly landed on my nose. I blinked at it and it fluttered to my ear. A big yellow butterfly gently floated over and landed on my paw. Soon a whole swarm of them floated up and down around me, like a swirl of multicolored petals. It happened in my backyard, too, if the magic was strong enough. Butterflies were small and light, and very magic sensitive. For some reason I made them feel safe and they gravitated to me like iron shavings to a magnet. They ruined my ferocious badass image, but you’d have to be a complete beast to swat butterflies.
If a baby deer frolicked out from between the buildings trying to cuddle up, I would roar. I wouldn’t bite it, but I would roar. I had my limits.”

“Even before I knew who you were, Aelin, I knew that what you were working toward . . . It was worth it.”
“What is?” Her throat tightened.
“A world where people like me don't have to hide.”

“A dog – a collie – went up to Eric, looked up at his face, and growled.
“Shoo,” Eric said, making an imperious gesture with his hand.”

“After changing shape several times, the ball eventually turned into a huge face. It floated alongside the air-car. This time, time instead of sending him a mental message, the face spoke out aloud and the whole air-car vibrated with its intensity. “If you are foolish enough to renege on your contract, you will be severely punished. For your sake, I hope you wouldn’t do such a thing.” When Tarmy made no attempt to respond, the face turned and pressed itself against the millipede-free window. A moment later, Tarmy felt the fat slug entering his mind, the sign that the face was attempting to use its powers to obtain his response by other means. But as the slug dug deeper, Samantha’s cover stories began springing out of the corners of his mind. Instead of obtaining Tarmy’s agreement, all that the face saw was a burning army transporter surrounded by bodies. Undeterred, the face continued its assault. Samantha had anticipated that Tarmy might come up against an adept, so the mental images of death and destruction flowed unchecked. After failing to break Tarmy’s defences, the face removed the slug and tried reason. “You can’t win, Mr Tarleton, so why don’t you do yourself a favour and cooperate? It will be better for you in the long run. Now, where is the miniature pulse drive engine?” Tarmy realised why the millipedes hadn’t been allowed to attack. It was obvious that the Great Ones were hoping to retrieve the engine. When Tarmy didn’t respond, the face said, “I am prepared to overlook your desertion if you agree to tell us where the engine is and also honour your contract by showing us how to convert the engine into a bomb.”

“She reached out, her fingers hesitant. The deer—Knox—tilted his head down, letting her touch his antlers. Her hand trembled slightly as she caressed the boney protrusion. The ivory tines were warmer than she thought they’d be, a living extension of the man inside. She petted his pelt next, charmed by the coarse fur and the feel of his muscles bunching and moving underneath.
Sitting back, she winked up at him. "You probably get this a lot, but…nice rack.”
The deer flashed back into a man who tackled her onto her pillows with a wolfy growl. “Always gotta be the smartass, don’t you?”

“There are Tantrics who deliberately seek to do more active forms of renunciation, so transgression of social norms and breaking of taboo, and breaking of social taboos especially, is a form of renunciation.”

“WEST SALEM ~ October 2011
A sudden vision, fraught with malevolence and darkness, obscured her sight. The face of a menacing figure turned from the shadows of his grisly handiwork and stared at Sorcha.
Her muscles tensed. By the Goddess, could he see her?
Please! No!
She wanted to scream, to run, but the vision ensnared her into the horrific moment like a fly in a spider's web.”

“Who else is going to do this job? What do you think that classified ad would read like? 'Dangerous job fighting otherworldly beings, no pay, fame or glory. Death possible. Slobber likely. Injuries always. Must distance yourself from family and friends for their protection.'" -- Cheveyo, Beyond the Darkness”

“Roan looked down at the pathetic little fur ball with a pink ribbon clipped to the top of its head and growled at it. It came from deep in his throat, and while it was unintentional, it wasn’t precisely a human noise. He could feel it in his throat, vibrating his vocal chords, and the dog’s ears rotated briefly in as much alarm as a dog could express, and then it whimpered and cringed, pissing on the sidewalk in submission.
The woman took a couple steps backward, eyes wide and horrified, and dragged her dog past them as she hurried off, the Pom more than happy to leave.
Paris looked at him, an eyebrow raised and the corner of his mouth quirked up in a half smile. “I love it when you get defensive.”
“I’m the king of the jungle.I’m not taking any shit from a living dust mop.”

“His eyes went to predatory mode, following my every movement. The gold flecks in his eyes gleamed.
I was going to have to burn him again. I could see it in his eyes.
Were-cats and their constant need to poke and bat at things.”

“So...I suggest you try and get control over your more unusual nature, see if you can't coax those claws away, and I'll try very, very hard not to throw up over what's left of your shoes. How does that sound?”

“Shapeshifter
show me your face
look into my eyes
and lie
again
hide
from your past
hide
from your path
bury my light
beneath your deception
bury the truth
beneath my longing
tear the veil
and let me see
what can’t be undone
the fall”

“By the time her eyes found me, she couldn’t speak. I watched how the light left her crystal-blue eyes. Still, when her eyes became lifeless to the world around us, it seemed so sudden.
I didn’t care if I was showing weakness.
I let fear swallow me whole. Agony suffocating my heart, I allowed my tears to fall.”

“I bit back a shout as my fresh burns burst with pain. The bars dug into my back—the only part of my body that remained unharmed. Despite that, she was not touching any of my wounds. She knew where all of them were, yet she wasn’t digging into them to get me to submit—like her red-cloaked companion surely would have if their places had been reversed.”

“When I had taken the whip to the Viking, my mind had clouded. Anger had corrupted my thoughts—claimed my body and mind. Losing myself to the harsh emotion had scared me. I felt like the bloodthirsty beast the Viking saw whenever he looked at me, and I never wanted to be that.”

“My mind was still reeling from having saved her. I was not entirely sure why I had acted so irrationally. Something had just … snapped. When it came down to it, I couldn’t let her die. I was unable to take her life, and I couldn’t walk away when another had tried.”

“I wanted to eliminate what remained of curses and judgment and the hatred we had been spat our whole lives. Because this—this was something I could not ignore. This was something bigger than I could explain. And I was more than confident I was not the only one who felt such an urge for the forbidden.”

“It had taken me a while to realize she was beautiful. But once I got up close to her, once I spent so much time around her, finding those sharp, green eyes watching me with a threat or the spark of something else—there was no going back. I had broken through her barriers and my own prejudices, and there was no undoing it.”

“The notion that he would consider her strange when he had just transformed from a sparkling silver pillar into a man clad in blaring orange who had seemingly appeared out of nowhere for the mere purpose of asking her opinion on fountains was a fascinating, somewhat bewildering, and—had circumstances been different—altogether amusing paradox.”
