I love this series, and I think it has Hp obsession potential. A warning though, this first book is simpler in tone than its sequels (though the same can be said of Harry Potter). And it looks deceptively simpler than it really is, only reading right to the end and even the next sequels does one get what is really going on. But mentioning just in case.

I am not sure how good this series is going to turn up to be, I am still waiting for book 3. But while it is pretty different in setting and tone ( alternate universe, american boarding school, aimed at older kids) it has some elements in common with HP, the boarding school thing and the type of plotting.
