Kenny | 13 comments Amazon has CyberMonday deals on Ebooks. I found some Dortmunder Westlake, Ken Bruen, Lawrence Block, James Ellroy, etc. Warnings: 1) some books might be out of copyright and can be found free elsewhere 2) Some are not novels; they are short stories, novelettes, etc. Check the page count.

Happy maxing out those credit cards!!

message 8: by AndrewP (new)

AndrewP (andrewca) | 85 comments As well as those CyberMonday deals I searched Kindle Books for ones by Hard Case Crime and found a couple for under $5. Not bad considering most Kindle books seem to sell for around $10 nowadays.

Well, many of us indies are selling our Kindle Books for less than $5. But most of us are unknowns! ;-)

These are real bargains and I urge all members of the Pulp Fiction group to support Prologue Books.

I've been purchasing a number of these to read on my iPad despite owning the original paperback editions as I wish to preserve the mostly "VG" (and the rare "mint") copies of my hardboiled paperback collection.

Most recently I purchased, downloaded & read Harry Whittington's excellent "One Deadly Dawn" rather than risk cracking the spine or doing further damage to my Ace Double edition.
I've also downloaded a couple of old Ed Lacy Prologue editions of paperbacks I fear can not stand up to another two-fisted read.

You can't go wrong with these ...unless of course you opt for the awesome Stark House Press two-fer trade paperbacks.

is there "good" OCR?
I've yet to experience it in any of the ebook reprints of classic paperback hardboiled crime novels I've purchased.
Especially in the really, really rare titles I've downloaded from the good folks at Munsey's.

Please keep in mind that these titles are impossible to find at reasonable prices elsewhere so I can abide the poor OCR.

message 29: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) | 446 comments OCR has come a long way, not that I'm any expert. The newer software we get for free with all-in-one HP laser printers seems to do a much better job with less hassle than even 5 years ago & is miles ahead of where it was a decade ago.

I'm with you on being able to live with the errors for the privilege of being able to read the book.

message 30: by N.R. (new)

N.R. Grabe (nrgrabe) | 4 comments Two of my books are available for free this weekend via Amazon Kindle. They are two books of a five part alternative history, e-pulp series.

***** WILD MARJORAM: THE VOTE

Wild Marjoram follows a timeline where WWI never ended, in fact, it expanded. Here Germany occupies the East Coast of the USA, and if that wasn't bad enough, mob factions fight over the remaining free-zones!

Our heroine is a blonde haired blue-eyed mechanic with a locket that holds the key to her past. This perfect Aryan specimen lives in hiding from the Nazi occupation. If they discovered her, she’d be condemned to the fate of a broodmare. But she's not the type of girl to give up without a fight.

The Resistance has devised a plan to free the Nazi stranglehold of New York. It includes Wild Marjoram and Jerry of Chicagoland. So the two traveling companions set out on a long and winding road through the free-zones of North America to coordinate with other freedom fighters. It's the same route once traveled by her mother before her death. While on the mission Marj seeks clues from a shrouded past in hopes to connect with a mother she never knew. However, the best laid plans of mice and women…

Wild Marjoram: The Vote is the first stop of a five part road trip to the Broken Apple.

Free Oct 11th-Oct 13th at this link: http://www.amazon.com/Wild-Marjoram-U...

***** WILD MARJORAM: THE DETOUR

A few days ago, Marj and Jerry rolled into a cloistered farming community with the best of intensions. Their mission was to coordinate with friendly members of the underground resistance. Unfortunately the alleged allies were not what they appeared to be. As lies and betrayals add up it became clear the reportedly safe-heaven was actually as a nest of vipers. The throughly deceived traveling companions were separated, imprisoned, and on a short walk to the gallows.

Thanks to quick-thinking and a deception of her own, Marj escapes, frees Jerry and the couple hightail it out of corn country with one fortunate prize.

Spurred by mysterious clues uncovered in a secret diary, the road trip takes our heroes head to meet up with some old friend in New New Paris, in New Canada. Unfortunately the scars of their captivity remain and put a strain on the traveling companions relationship…as Marj finds communication with the past and a strange supernatural presence lurking...

Wild Marjoram: The Detour is the second stop of a five part road trip to the Broken Apple.

Free Oct 11-15th at this link: http://www.amazon.com/Wild-Marjoram-D...

***** THE PILL

A short Wild Marjoram story available for free via the E-pulp sampler. In Chicagoland, Marj finds out her safe live as a mechanic isn't all it seems and neither are the Slates who are grey-eyed machine-like women who used to be human. These women are now gang leaders, trying to make women equal in their eyes, the hard way and the only way the mean streets of the city will let them…

Free Sampler: http://www.amazon.com/ePulp-Sampler-V...

Upcoming works include the short story, The Birth, soon to be in a Dieselpunk Sampler and Part Three of the WM road trip, called The Spitfire, where Marj fixes planes and starts her fight in the Broken Apple.

Thank you for any support. If you can, please like us on Facebook. Thanks!

I paid for my download of WILD MARJORAM: THE VOTE (Stop 1) a few months ago.
I've only read the 1st part but what I've read, I really enjoyed.
Totally intriguing premise and nice writing.
Without having even finished WILD MARJORAM: THE VOTE I'd recommend it to fans of SF, Dieselpunk, and Golden Age Science Fiction/Adventure pulps.

Sorry: unfortunately I do not do no Facebook.

R.D. Harless (rdharless) | 4 comments My hardboiled pulp ebook Bloody Copper, Roaring Lead will be on sale on the Kindle today and through tomorrow for 99c (regularly $3.99). Behold, a synopsis:

Prohibition, 1926. Chicago is known as the "wettest city in America." Cops are on the take, bootleggers operate out in the open, and violence is commonplace. It's a town where a private eye like Horace Freem can make a living from the scofflaws and the law-abiding alike as long as he knows the angles to play. And Freem knows there's always an angle to play. His latest case is no exception: Thomas Hendricks, the son of a wealthy but faltering Chicago family has gone missing. Gone with him are the location of a copper fortune that any miner would kill for and a suitcase stuffed with forty-five thousand dollars to mine it. The money for solving the case is too much to pass up, and the trail of Thomas Hendricks will take Freem from the stained streets and ivory towers of Chicago to the hardscrabble mining towns and ranches of Ely, Nevada. It’s not long before Thomas's disappearance looks more like a murder, but Nevada's Copper City is a different game from the windy one Freem knows. In the high desert, a patronizing smile and a quick remark don’t get you as much as a loaded gun in a quick hand. And with cowboys and locals lining up to show Freem the way back home on a train or in a box, he'll have to be a fast study in how things work in the West if he wants to solve the mystery of what happened to Thomas Hendricks.

If you enjoy the P.I. genre as much as I do, I think you'll dig this little entry into it. In closing, I have no smooth way to end this post. The writing in the book is way better, though, I promise.

A few years back I bought a box of what they call sexy, sleaze books on Ebay at a tag sale. I finally sold most of the box on Ebay. The author most represented was Orrie Hitt. I ended up selling the seven of his PB's to his daughter. I researched him after the sale and immediately regretted selling them. He wrote an awful lot of pulp novels, writing at a feverish pace for most of his career. His daughter said, though there are a lot of rumors about his being like his characters, it wasn't true. He was quite happy in his writing and supported a family on it. He had a pretty normal life and wrote what he wanted to.

I'm going to have to check out those Prologue Ebooks!

Agreed.
Many of the harder-to-find Charles Willeford, Harry Whittington (& associated writers) pulp/sexploitation novels are available to download on the Munseys site.

My 1st read of Jonathan Latimer's Solomon's Vineyard was obtained from that site.
