No, it does not have to be fiction. It just needs to have an American adventure and be classified as Juvenile/MG/YA.

The Camping Trip That Changed America by Barb Rosenstock by Barb Rosenstock
This book documents the trip Teddy Roosevelt took from DC to CA to camp with John Muir. This camping trip started the National Park Service movement.
