Great thanks - will check with one out!

I second Mary Downing Hahn
I saw this at my son's book fair last month and thought it looked interesting:
The Gathering by Dan Poblocki.
I enjoyed A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness
My daughter loved the Goosebumps books by R.L. Stine and a A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket.
Are the books for a girl or a boy?

Great - thanks!

An 11 year old girl. She did read "Deep, Dark and Dangerous" by Hahn and really like it so will check out the others. Getting a great list here - thanks!

I'd recommend The Thickety, which is a compelling fantasy with great depth to its characters and a significant focus on kindness, self-sacrifice, forgiveness and redemption. There is no inappropriate content for children, but there are some dark parts, so it is more appropriate for those above 12.
