Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments One of the group reads for October is A Study in Charlotte by Brittany Cavallaro.

Please discuss the book in this thread.

Janice will be leading the discussion.

In order to receive a badge you must:
1. have read the book before or during October 2019.
2. discussed it in this thread. Discussion must be more than "I read the book and I liked it". Discussion requires something more substantial and analytical of what you read, for example, thoughts, opinions, impact it had on you, what was your favourite part, was it what you expected it to be like etc. You may also like to review the book and post a link to the review in this thread. Please refer to our group spoiler policy for further information.
3. Report that you have read AND discussed the book in the reporting thread (include a brief summary of what you thought of the book).

A note on discussion: Discussion must be more than "I read the book and I liked it". Discussion requires something more substantial and analytical of what you read, for example, thoughts, opinions, impact it had on you, what was your favourite part, was it what you expected it to be like etc.

In addition to this, the group reads are meant to be a "read along" so it is preferable that you discuss the book as you read rather than wait until you've finished the book.

And finally, discussion is not about just listing your thoughts. Please interact with the other group members, comment on their thoughts, and if they comment on yours, respond to them. This is what makes a good book discussion!

You may also like to review the book and post a link to the review in this thread.

Please refer to our group spoiler policy for further information.

General Rules:
1. Please mark your spoilers with the spoiler tags along with mentioning what stage of the book you are at so other's don't get a nasty shock. Chapter numbers/titles are generally best as they are the same across all formats and editions. See our spoiler policy
2. The book may be combined with the Year Long Challenge, Topplers, and Monthly Challenges.

Happy reading!

Janice (jamasc) | 60095 comments I will start reading the book after work today. I'm looking forward to it.

message 3: by Kristie, Moderator (new) - added it

Kristie | 19334 comments I am still hoping to add this one at the end of the month. I own it, but it is on my old laptop so I put in a request through the library for their audio edition. If it comes in on time, I'll be able to take it with me (and speed it up a bit) so it will be easier to get through on time.

Jenn | 3033 comments I’m so glad that it is finally Oct and this thread is up lol
I finished my last book two days ago, and that afternoon while I was trying to select my next book . . . yep, my library hold came in for this one lol

I’m a little over half way at this point, and am quite enjoying both the writing and the story. And, I must admit that I am still trying to figure out who done it 🤷‍♀️but I am totally enjoying the ride lol

message 5: by Janice, Moderator (new) - rated it 4 stars

Janice (jamasc) | 60095 comments I started reading it tonight and am almost at the end of Chapter 3.

I like that the author is keeping the characters true to the original. (view spoiler)

You're moving right along! You'll be finished in no time. What are your initial thoughts of the book?

Jenn | 3033 comments I'm really enjoying it Janice. (view spoiler) There is a lot going on, but it manages to keep a light feel. I know I'm at work, but I wish people would stop asking me to do work so I can finish the book lol

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I did not get an email notice yet, but I just checked my library requests and it indicates that my book is available for pick up. I will be heading over as soon as I get off of work.

message 9: by Janice, Moderator (new) - rated it 4 stars

Janice (jamasc) | 60095 comments I won't get a chance to listen to more today. It's been a hectic day. Hopefully, tomorrow will be better.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Got it! I read the first chapter before I left the library parking lot. Entertaining start.

I had a headache by the time I got home and took an Aspirin and a nap.

My granddaughter and I are watching The Dark Crystal mini series on Netflix. We have been watching an episode every night. Episode four was tonight.

I just finished reading chapter two. (view spoiler) I do like the humor and sarcasm. “I missed London, like an arm or a leg”. (view spoiler)

Janice (jamasc) | 60095 comments I suspect it will be a lot like Stephen King's books in that there are little Easter eggs hidden throughout the story that refer to other books.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I couldn't sleep and did not want to listen to my audiobook and miss anything, so I read chapter 3, even though I was not going to. (I was going to limit myself to two chapters a day, until I finish the book that I am currently reading for my MM challenge.) I have two audiobooks on the go and am dying to start my monthly challenge book. I do not want to spoiler chapter 3 yet. I did not bring the book to work with me.

Janice - re your chapter 3 spoiler in message 5 (view spoiler)

message 13: by Jenn (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jenn | 3033 comments I just finished 😃
Somehow I doubt that I would have picked it up on my own, but I am so glad I did.

Janice (jamasc) | 60095 comments I'm going to be away for a long weekend, leaving tomorrow and coming back Monday. I'll be listening to the audiobook while I'm driving and hopefully will be able to make some comments when I get some time to myself.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Okay, the younger age makes me feel better.
I’m reading chapter three again. (view spoiler)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Chapter four. (view spoiler)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I just finished chapter four. That was a long chapter. I must be slow because I’m not getting it yet, at least that is how it feels. (view spoiler)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I read chapter five last night. It was short.(view spoiler)

I just finished chapter six.

message 30: by Janice, Moderator (new) - rated it 4 stars

Janice (jamasc) | 60095 comments I just got home a short while ago, had some supper and will now attempt to get caught up on the posts in our group. I'm fading quickly so not sure how much catching up will happen.

Cherie, thanks for your wishes that I had a good weekend. It was a mixed bag. The purpose of the trip was to attend a family memorial service for my ex-husband who was killed in a car accident 2-1/2 weeks ago. The hardest part is being a support to my son while struggling with my own emotions. Yesterday was a lovely break from everything when my dad and I went on a day trip to the Ya Ha Tinda Horse Ranch back in the mountains. It's owned by the federal government but open to the public. The weather was beautiful, the picnic tasty, and the scenery spectacular. Very healing.

I finished the audiobook on my way to my dad's on Friday. I quite enjoyed it.

I think my comments left off at Chapter 5. So, Chapter 6 - (view spoiler)

Chapter 7 - (view spoiler)

Chapter 8 - (view spoiler)

Chapter 9 - (view spoiler)

Chapter 10 - (view spoiler)

Chapter 11 - (view spoiler)

Chapter 12 - (view spoiler)

I have only read 25% of the complete Sherlock Holmes stories, so I've likely missed a lot of "Easter eggs".

I could read the rest tonight, but strange as it sounds, I’m not ready for the end yet. I’m going to listen to Jane Steele for an hour or so. I’m enjoying it so far.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I’m sorry, Janice. I forgot about the service for your ex-husband. I’m glad you found time to be with your father and have a wonderful respite though. It is wonderful that you are so close to your father and can spend time with him. (view spoiler)

I thought chapter 10 was strong too. So much going on. I haven't read the short story, The Adventure of the Dying Detective yet.

Jenn | 3033 comments We keep working over the misuse of the YA label, and I'm not agreeing with its use in this case. Tagging a book as YA based entirely on the age of the MC(s) without regard for the content of the book is completely misleading.

Nothing wrong with the YA genre, or the content of this book, but if books were tagged appropriately, more consistently, the tagging system would be more beneficial to the reading public.

It's a problem with other genres too. In this case, Study in Charlotte was offered as a freebie with the SYNC summer program for teens 13+. I include myself in the "+" :)
