Museum 4: The National Art Center in Tokyo


1. Location - Tokyo, Japan
Task: Read a book set in Japan.

2. About - Its Monet exhibition, held between 7 April and 2 July 2007, was the second most visited exhibition of the year, not only in Japan but in the world.
Task: Read a book that is the 2nd in a series.

3. Collection - Great Wave off Kanagawa

Task: Read a book with waves on the cover.

4. Interactive Item - based on the National Art Center in Tokyo.
Task: Your choice based on your selection from the collection. Required - link to the picture and explain connection.

I found a site that said the building was a work of art. It also said that that it was the only museum considered an "empty" museum.

Can Doll Bones be consider as waves?

It's pretty amazing. I almost did a task based on that glass structure. You could use it for "glass" in title for your interactive task if you like. Just a suggestion.

I was hoping to use the building itself for a task. Task- Read a book with a painting or drawing of a house on cover. Would you accept that?

You can use the building, but I don't understand the connection to it being a house. You'll need to justify that connection so that I can understand where you're getting "house" from it.

Should I change the word to building or structure just to be more vague? I am not going to lie.. I am worried about these tasks.

I have to admit that I write them in a way I know I can find at least one book on my bookshelves that will fit. I don't know which, and I might be surprised that books fit while I did not think about them while writing the task. But I make sure I'm not painting myself in a corner ;)

Yes. If you change it to building, that would be fine.

As for fitting tasks to books you own, that's fine. You can see a collection item that has a dove on it and you know who have a book with the word "dove" in the title, by all means, use that as a task. Don't overthink it too much.

I haven't seen your thread, but Peggy says it looks good so it sounds like you're on track.

Can we use the exhibition held there, since it has no permanent collection? Such as this forest of numbers?

I would say yes, since they don't house a permanent collection.

I didn't even consider the difference between a collection and an exhibition. I was just looking at what was housed in the museum. Now I'll have to go back and check on my choices just to see which they are.

I think exhibition was included in the challenge blurb from what I recall. In relation to the interactive tasks.

I included exhibitions as well, but I did wonder if the links will work throughout the year. If an exhibition is over, maybe the link changes or the information is removed from the website?

Yes, you may use exhibitions being held at the museum - either past, present, or future exhibitions.

You might need to screen shot those pictures so that you don't lose the link.

I was also thinking of using the building itself for the interactive task.
It was designed by Kisho Kurokawa. My task would be to read a book written by an author with the same letter for first and last name, eg Marissa Meyer (M), Benjamin Black (B).
If that isn't okay, I'll come up with something else. Thanks

For the Collections task, Read a book with waves on the cover:
Do the waves have to be water?
I think I'd like to read if it qualifies.

Considering that the book is about navigating a "sea of words", I will accept these words as waves.

Janice - is the series criteria explicit to at least three books in a series or can a sequel apply. I am specifically referring to Ready Player Two.
I have another place for it but IF it fits I might use it for this task.

In YLTO, a series is identified as being at least 3 books.

So, for the interactive task, I was thinking of going for a book whose title is either made of up 7 words or 7 letters.

Is that okay?

No, sorry. The interactive tasks are to be derived by the collection or exhibits.

I'm rethinking this ruling. I did say that interactive tasks could be based on building features. I make so many rulings that I forget sometimes. It's a good thing I have people who keep me on the straight and narrow.

Can you give me a link to where these rooms are discussed as part of the features of the museum and I will review it? Thanks.

I also have another idea. There was an exhibition by Yayoi Kusama at the national art center in which her "My Eternal Soul" paintings were displayed.
In the exhibition, there was an art piece by her, in which beautiful 3D flowers were displayed. Below is a link to the image of the 3D flowers.

I used Yayoi Kusama's flower exhibition as well, with task flowers on cover, so maybe you want to focus on the task flower in the title? Or maybe book with colorful cover etc

Thanks for posting that link to the architectural design. I have allowed the exterior of the building, so I will allow your task as well. Thanks for being patient with me.

The other two ideas work as well, so now you have to decide which one you'll chose for your interactive task.

Also, do I have to finish one museum completely before moving on to the next? I know that for the first badge, we need to finish 4 museums or 16 books completely. But since I've picked at least 3 museums already, I was hoping to maybe read a books from another one.

For the book with waves on the cover, I found 2 more options for anyone that's looking.

You don't need to read in order Gunit. Just make sure you report for what badge you want a book to count.

Since it's floral, the actual task would be "Read a book that has flower(s) in the title".

Would that be okay? Can I also do something like: The title has to have flowers in it. So a like a title with 'rose' or 'tulip' would also be okay? Or is that too broad of a definition?

Both of your task ideas would work. You're good as long as I can understand how you got from the picture to the creation of your task. I can certainly follow yours.

This is one long wave at the shoreline, thinking it's ok but thought i should check it's ok for task: Read a book with waves on the cover.

I can use it elsewhere but this task works best for me i think....

I came here to check on the same cover about waves. I'm glad Anne did it already. :)
