Do you have books on your list which were highly praised but didn't live up to your expectations or the hype it has?

Tell us here!

Austin George | 471 comments Yeah. But I acknowledge that most other readers liked it. Most of my favourite books are more often rated between 3.6 - 3.8 stars on GR rather than 4.2- 4.3 stars. So when I add a book to my TBR I usually don't get carried away with the high stars or get put off by the low stars. I just see whether the subject interests me and whether I like the writing style of the author. If it's a new author, it's a bit of a gamble but I like to explore new authors.

That's nice, of course everyone has different tastes due to which there are differences in ratings but what I mean by overrated books here is that books you absolutely didn't like, like 1 to 2 stars but were highly rated by others.

Shawna Finnigan (sugoishawn) | 945 comments Literally any John Green book, A Darker Shade of Magic, and Geekerella

message 11: by Hailey (new)

Hailey (haileyythereader) A Wrinkle in Time, this is like a classic fantasy book but i honestly HATED this one

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

The old man and the sea is the most overrated book. It took the author more than 50 pages to describe the pain in the old man's hand when I could just describe it using 1 simple sentence. Clueless as to why everyone is giving that book 5 stars.

Sara L. (saralnerd) | 143 comments Hmmm Divergent? Most of the books I've read so far Haven't disappointed me..but this one really did, because some people compared it to The Hunger Games! Which no one should unless it's that level of good...and this wasn't (in my p.o.v)

Lily (stormyeagleofominosity) | 23 comments I read Red Queen quite a while ago and kind of liked it at time, but it's pretty forgettable and not that original, and does not deserve half of the hype it gets. I also agree that A Wrinkle in Time is not that great, a teacher recommended it to me once and I just couldn't get into it. The same goes for Divergent, I couldn't get past the first chapter, and I had heard mixed things about it beforehand. Generally I try to stay away from books that are hyped a lot, because my expectations will be high and I don't want to get disappointed.

message 15: by Gouri (new)

Gouri Verma (gouriverma) The book- The little prince is pretty famous and is also translated to many languages but when I read it I regreted it😂The story really made no sense to me.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 382 comments The Great Gatsby. It was okay, but I just remember disliking all the characters so much.

Anything by James Patterson or Dan Brown. Also, Stephen King. Yes, I know the blasphemy! Stephen King can not write decent women characters . . . and reading his male gaze characters are, yuck. I remember reading It by Stephen King in Junior High and being beyond disgusted. I stuck to it cause I was reading it with my male friends. -_- I've always been surprised by how much of his fanbase is female readers.

Twilight, but I'm gonna reread the books and give them a second chance. (I had wanted The Vampire Academy to blow up instead at the time.) Not to mention I loved The Host by Stephenie Meyer , so maybe I missed somehting the first time around with the Twilight books.

Hush, Hush (Hush, Hush, #1) by Becca Fitzpatrick Beautiful Creatures (Caster Chronicles, #1) by Kami Garcia Fallen (Fallen, #1) by Lauren Kate

Luna (luna13) The Hobbit. I get that it was written a long time ago but the writing was far too dry and didn't click with me.

Hopefully LOTR lives up to its hype.

message 18: by Austin (new)

Austin George | 471 comments Same here Luna. As I enjoyed the movie so much I had high expectations for the book. I was so bored with the book. Finished it bcoz the book is around 350 pages only. I too hope that LOTR lives up to it's hype.

Megan | 54 comments There’s a book called Autoboyography by Christina Lauren that I saw so much hype about and was so excited to read, but it just didn’t work for me and I dnf. This could be because I’m picky with romance books anyway, but I just wasn’t a fan of the writing

Sreehitha | 944 comments Throne of glass series

message 21: by Nathan (new)

Nathan (nathan-93) - Red Queen Series
- COTAR Series
- Mortal Instruments from Book 4
- Game of Thrones [ No words to be said. They tested my patience so much ]

message 22: by Ananya (new)

Ananya A very unpopular opinion - The folk of air trilogy and Cardan are overrated. When I read them, I did not get what the hype was about.

message 24: by Milica (new)

Milica DIY The Fault In Our Stars and Rebecca are the most recent overrated books I've ever read. I see the appeal, but why are the ratings so high?

message 25: by Milica (new)

Milica DIY Oh, sorry. I saw the rules now. It still counts, though.

message 26: by Milica (new)

Milica DIY I didn't like The Fault In Our Stars because of the predictability, shallow characterization, pretentiousness and emotional manipulation.

message 27: by Milica (new)

Milica DIY I didn't like Rebecca because the book was so painfully slow that barely anything happened before the seventy percent mark. (This comes from a reader who loves slower books.) The description of the atmosphere of Manderley was skillful and lovely, but making it the main point of the story for such a long time was something I can't appreciate. The main character was a bit too annoying, even for a person who's supposed to be naive, insecure, immature and a person who married her first love. She just went on and on about how she wasn't Rebecca for the majority of the story. The love interest was a condescending jerk. Everyone was two-dimensional and uninteresting, except Rebecca (who's dead) and Mrs Danvers. Right before the ball is hosted (70 ℅), the book turns into predictable melodrama. Also, the love interest does something horrible and something is revealed about Rebecca. (won't say what because of spoilers) The main character becomes less insecure thanks to the love interest's opinion on both her and Rebecca. What should have been a cool gothic story about the problems about our society in the 1930s turned out to be a standard romance novel for me. In my eyes, this was so unoriginal and boring that maybe even writing this in the 19th century would have been too late. I don't know, I am just getting into the classics and the gothic. I haven't read Jane Eyre yet, but I heard that Rebecca rips it off a lot.
