Yunie (sweetopheliac) | 36 comments Hello y'all! Recently I watched the movie Near Dark (1987) and it really got me in the mood for vampires...specifically 80s vampires. I love Near Dark and I love the Lost Boys. So I'm looking for books that either have the same feel as those movies or vampire novels that were released in the 80s. Currently I do own Night Blood by Eric Flanders and I do have access to They Thirst by Robert Mccammon through my library's Hoopla. I might have a few in my TBR as well.

However I would like some other reccomendations! Thanks! :)

Reading (readingwithmichael) They Thirst is one of the best vampire novels.

Maybe try out The Hunger by Whitley Strieber

Yunie (sweetopheliac) | 36 comments I've heard a lot of good things about They Thirst so it's definitely on my list!
I'll totally look into The Hunger as well. Thanks Michael! :)

Robert Kratky (bolorkay) | 342 comments I cannot speak any more highly than the characters in Brian Lumley's "Necroscope" series! A wonderful cross between horror, science fiction and adventure!

Char | 17481 comments Long before Game of Thrones, George R.R. Martin wrote a phenomenal vampire story: Fevre Dream.

Obviously: 'Salem's Lot

Afterage is from the early 90's.

I agree with Char on Fevre Dream. Also; try Christopher Buehlman's The Suicide Motor Club.

Scott Neumann (scottneumann) | 483 comments I totally agree with They Thirst one of my favorite vampire novels.

Also agree with Char, Fevre Dream is fantastic historical vampire novel, and Yvonne Navarro's Afterage is a good one too.

There's also The Light at the End, Night Life, or Sunglasses After Dark very 80's. The vampires don't sparkle in those books, very mean, very 'Near Dark'.

The Delicate Dependency by Michael Talbot The Delicate Dependency is a 1980s vampire novel. Haven't read it just yet, it's my next book for Halloween reading, but it gets great reviews.

Gah! How could I have forgotten The Light at the End or Nightlife?

I'd definitely recommend Buehlman, even though he's not an 80's author. He's contemporary and he's fabulous. I highly recommend The Lesser Dead by Christopher Buehlman

This IS very good, with a different kind of vampire.

True, but I wanted to sneak him in for the discussion.... LOL

Char | 17481 comments I freaking love his work, so with that in mind? Well done! lol

message 15: by Terry (new)

Terry | 5378 comments This one, Until Summer Comes Around was written just last year, but is set in the ‘80’s. Very good though! Maybe a little bit of The Lost Boys vibe to it.

Though it's the third in the series, Anne Rice's
The Queen of the Damned (The Vampire Chronicles, #3) by Anne Rice is pure 80s.

Yunie (sweetopheliac) | 36 comments Wow! Ya'll have given me so many good recommendations! My TBR has definitely gotten a little longer haha! And Thriftbooks has gotten more of my money. :') I ended up going ahead and getting Afterage, The Hunger and Sunglasses After Dark for now.
Salem's Lot and The Queen of the Damned I can get through my library since they're classics/well known. The other newer ones I might be able to get through the library as well. I know though that the older more niche/obscure titles I'll just have to add to my own personal collection (which really isn't too big of a deal).

Thank you guys so much! I really appreciate it.

Kinda feels like the 1980s (or late 70s) when reading it.

I saw Near Dark many years ago and really loved it. Are you looking for movies rather than books? Or both?

For books I agree with everyone recommending Fevre Dream, also
the original Dracula by Bram Stoker
Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice
and some of Rice's companion stories like The Vampire Armand, Pandora and Merrick.

For movies if you haven't seen The Lost Boys, you must!
Also the 1931 version of Dracula with Bela Lugosi, Dracula, Prince of Darkness with Christopher Lee and if you like Horror Comedy B-movies, there's an indie on Amazon Video called The Old Blood: Flamel's Legacy starring Sam Terry that's good for a laugh.

message 23: by Gianfranco (new)

Gianfranco Mancini | 582 comments Ray Garton's Live Girls is a classic 80s vampire novel too.
I've read it again this summer and it aged much well.
Sadly its sequel Night Life was just not as good, such a shame.

This is WAY late, but in case you're still being notified,

Almost exactly the feel of the movie "Near Dark" is Poppy Z. Brite's Lost Souls. Road-tripping vampires heading to New Orleans on the goth side.
Lost Souls by Poppy Z. Brite

And right along the feel/idea of the 80s horror movie (and not far off "Lost Boys") is John Skipp and Craig Spector's first novel, The Light at the End. Roller-skate/bike couriers in New York in the early 80s take on a fledgling vampire douchebag. It's dark, fast-paced, and deadly. Also my favourite vampire novel.
The Light at the End by John Skipp

message 25: by Kandice (new)

Kandice | 360 comments The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires takes place in the 80's (I think) and Hendrix is perfectly funny on the edge, but not quite there, scary, but writes a good gross out at the the same time!

I, Vampire The Confessions of a Vampire - His Life, His Loves, His Strangest Desires ... by Michael Romkey by Michael Romkey when I was about 20 & loved it! It was published in 1990.
I saw others mentioned The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice.
The Vampire Lestat, Queen of the Damned & Tale of the Body Thief feel very 80's.
I'm thinking about this. I've read a lot of vampire books. I'll probably think of more.

message 27: by Ann (new)

Ann Schwader (annkschwader) | 159 comments I'd also recommend Sunglasses After Dark (Sonja Blue, #1) by Nancy A. Collins

& its sequels. Sonja Blue is a classic 1980s anti-heroine!
