Another spy is with her but leaves when they have a disagreement. He returns when he realizes she’s in danger and finds her in the dungeon. If she moves at all, she will die. Probably written in the 1970’s or 1980’s.

Can you tell us more about the main characters? Who is the heroine and who is she spying for/against?

Yes, I would say romantic suspense. I remember that she was educated and someone asked her to spend the weekend at the castle to spy on the owner. The other spy, (maybe Hugh?), was there to help but thought she betrayed them by getting romantically involved with the owner, so he left. He found out she never left the castle & went back for her. She had been in the torture device for a while when he found her.

It was probably the early 1980’s & I don’t think the author was well know.

None of these either. She wasn’t a member of the upper class. I liked her because she was different than the usual heroine. And it was clean romance.
