Does anyone have any favorite creatures that you love to read about? Are there certain authors that you gravitate towards in creature horror? Let us know so we can fill up our tbrs with creatures!

I will say that author Hunter Shea has a great selection of creature horror books out there.

Vickie (bookfan4ever) | 301 comments I'm here!😁 But I think creature horror needs it's own spot, otherwise this thread is going to go berserk!😂

Gotcha!😊👍

And definitely agree about Hunter Shea, he's awesome!

Vickie (bookfan4ever) | 301 comments I also love animal creature horror! Besides the classics, like Jurassic Park and Jaws, these are some I really enjoyed...

Meg series by Steve Alten
Natural Selection by Dave Freedman
Below and What Lurks Beneath by Ryan Lockwood
The Nest by Gregory Douglas
The Hatching series by Ezekiel Boone

And a ton from Hunter Shea 😊

Cool list - I need to check out Mayberry as soon as I am done reading the Pine Deep trilogy - one more book to go.

Also I need to finish Bobby Adair too - I own the whole series - read books 1&2 and need to finish him as well.

These all look good too, Vickie!

May I suggest you checking out this author as well as I am in the middle of a book by him and I read a book by him two years ago that rocked.

Michael R. Cole

I read this one: Thresher and
I am reading this one now: SCAR: A Deep Sea Thriller - this is super good so far!

Vickie (bookfan4ever) | 301 comments Yes, Cole has been on my radar. Thanks for reminding me as I really need to check him out.😊👍

You are welcome! :)

Thresher is what hooked me and started my journey into his world. I even did my own research on Thresher sharks and I rarely do research of books I am reading but I did with that book. :)

Ian (RebelGeek) Seal (rebel-geek) | 409 comments I have read a great many zombie books!
My favorite author for this is Jonathan Maberry
Rot & Ruin series is fantastic, but if you want to see how it started, Dead of Night series tells that story & there is cross over between these series & the Joe Ledger novels (not all about zombies, just a couple) starting with Patient Zero. Most if not all the audiobooks are narrated by Ray Porter!

message 14: by Vickie (new)

Vickie (bookfan4ever) | 301 comments Yes, I loved Patient Zero too!😊

message 15: by Justin (new)

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 334 comments One of my favorite creatures is the Wendigo. I've read a few books with them and even watched a few shows with them in it(one being Hannibal which was such an amazing show and they canceled it gah!). I also like the chupacabra because from the footage I've seen people show there's no living animal that looks like that thing which I find fascinating.

Also...Bigfoot but we won't tread into that territory.

message 16: by Ian (RebelGeek) (new)

Ian (RebelGeek) Seal (rebel-geek) | 409 comments The thing I found disappointing about the remake of Pet Sematary was they didn't show the Wendigo. Hannibal was TV at it's finest! That show is why I'm a fan of Mads Mikkelsen.

message 17: by Felina (new)

Felina | 648 comments @Ian - ME TOO! The wendigo was the best part of that book.

The wendigo might be my favorite creature too. I haven't read a wendigo book I didn't enjoy. Same with movies and games. I played the Until Dawn twice just because I loved the atmosphere.

message 19: by Felina (new)

Felina | 648 comments Ooo! Wendigo book recommendations please, Michelle! I think I’ve only read about a wendigo in Pet Sematary.

message 20: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan | 1302 comments Cryptids (Book One) by David Haynes has a Wendigo in it, and is well worth a read.

message 21: by Felina (new)

Felina | 648 comments Sweet! Added.

message 22: by Michelle (new)

Michelle I loved Pet Sematary! The Wendigo by Algernon Blackwood is great. So is The Shuddering by Ania Ahlborn

Indeed, could used either side of the hero/villain fence too.

Annerlee | 60 comments Now this is an area I know very little about… Ive read Jurassic Park and I Am Legend but I’m not
sure they even count! Oh.. and The Day of the Triffids lol. Where to start?

Is there such thing as a Zombie or Creature Feature classic? That’s probably a contentious question to ask 😂

Annerlee wrote: "Is there such thing as a Zombie or Creature Feature classic? That’s probably a contentious question to ask 😂..."

Well I am just going to throw something out there - lol - see where it lands.

Classic zombies to me are what I would find in the tv show The Walking Dead. Especially the first few seasons.

Classic creature feature - that is really broad as there are tons of movies/books that would be considered classic.

I will start with movies first: The Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Thing, etc. I am not going too deep into it as this thread comment will be a mile long - lol.

If you want to read books of creatures - I would try books from this author: Hunter Shea as he has quite a few out there about all kinds of creatures.

The other book mentioned above "Cryptids" in this thread - that author also has some other creature books out as well - this is the author: David Haynes.

Anything with zombies and/or creatures is kind of easy to find in movies and books. I would even say the movie Predator would be considered creature feature as the creature was from space. The movie franchise Alien - the same way.

Cool! :)

If you want to read about zombies - there are tons of authors out there that write zombie books. I haven't stepped into a lot of them but I have heard great things about this series - Rot & Ruin by Jonathan Maberry - it is on my radar. I have books by this author and he is great, so this series would be fun I am sure.

The other zombie series which I have started tapping into is this one: Zero Day by Bobby Adair - I have read the first two books and they are really good. I need to finish the series though as there is quite a few of them left.

Vickie (bookfan4ever) | 301 comments Just a heads up on the Rot & Ruin series...some feel it's more YA, which I tend to agree, but I still loved it. I know some people don't care to read YA, so just wanted to put it out there.😊

I would argue that Jaws is a creature feature classic.

Rot & Ruin is YA, but it's great! Anyway the Dead of Night & Joe Ledger books (which are connected to Rot & Ruin are not YA.

Another book that is chock full of creatures is this one:

The Haunted Forest Tour by James A. Moore The Haunted Forest Tour

Once the book gets going the pace becomes faster and there are tons of creatures within this book. You won't even have time to come up for air and will be exhausted by the time you lay down the book! :)
