Lizzie Heyes (lizzieheyes) Hi everyone.
My name is Lizzie, I’m based on the UK; I’m a mum, wife, nurse and well a book lover too. Ive recently fallen back in love with reading as I have found it really helps my mental health.
I’d love to make friends and gain recommendations.

I’m interested to know if people read for their mental health too and how has it helped?

I’d love to have more friend on GR so please feel free to add me!

Cath | 3 comments Hi Lizzie

I’ve added you! I’m a nurse too (Community ACP). I totally read for MH - escapism! I have to otherwise the stress of work would do me in! I never read hospital or health related fiction!!

I sent you a couple of books off your list!
Happy New Year! ☺️🇬🇧

Cath x

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) | 687 comments Hi, Lizzie! Books have been my solace in so many difficult patches in my life! I see you like romance—you might enjoy the Georgette Heyer group here on Goodreads. They read together and chat about one Heyer novel each month. This month’s book is Black Sheep.

I like to relax by reading books written before the middle of the twentieth century. There was a lot of clever, lighthearted domestic comedy written then. Angela Thirkell, Margery Sharp, D. E. Stevenson, Molly Clavering, Elizabeth Cadell are some of the authors who fall into this category. There’s a Goodreads group that reads a lot of books from that era, Retro Reads.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 454 comments Welcome. I'm not sure if I read for my mental health, but I do get twitchy if I don't read every day!

Claire Gallagher Hi Lizzie, I definitely read (and write) to help my mental health. I think I need that escapism otherwise I overthink reality. Claire x

Hi Lizzie, I certainly read for my mental health and reaching for a book is so much better than fiddling with my phone!

I carry a book everywhere with me (sometimes it's my Kindle, sometimes a good old paperback), and find the escapism books provide to be a real stress-buster.

Reading also helps me wind down at the end of the day and get a good night's sleep. It really doesn't matter what the subject/genre is, although during lockdown I avoided dystopian fiction for obvious reasons!

Charlotte | 30 comments Old thread but getting back into reading has improved my MH no end! When my mind is spiralling, reading gives me some quiet time then I’m fine again. I get twitchy too if I don’t have my reading time. It helps with my insomnia and if I don’t feel very well I can still usually read! Thank gawd I’ve given up my social media scrolling. Not helpful for anyone’s mental health.

Nikks | 526 comments I read novels for escapism and to live vicariously through some other characters lives and times. There's nothing like being really engrossed in a good book.

I have taken loads of apps off my phone, to prevent pointless scrolling. It has really helped my anxiety and I have so much more time.... for reading ;)
