UNO RULES AND IMPORTANT INFO
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Books must be more than 100 pages in length and Children's books, Graphic Novels, Manga, Cook Books, Plays and Poetry books can not be used unless by word count they can be verified as more than 25,000 words using arbookfind.com or more than 3 hours of audio using a reputable website (e.g. audible, overdrive)

For book titles starting with an article (A/An/The), the article can be ignored or used. So The Hiding Place, for example, could be used as title starting with T or H

Re-reads are ok provided it has been more than 6 months since last read

**Important note**
Some books on the color cover list may not seem like the color cover. This is because GR will show the default version. There may be a specific version that has been shelved that is the actual color. The version you read is what you should shelve, and is what counts, for UNO.

Michelle (govmarley) | 584 comments Books must be marked as "read" in Goodreads with the date AND shelved to your UNO shelf for the captain team to accurately track.
We will need to verify this to move it to the official sheet.

Also, please be sure you are posting in our team thread at least once a week, even if you haven't finished any books. We need to know you are still playing so we aren't scrambling at the end of the month.

Laura | 2892 comments Color Cards - February - Completed

Each Color card may only be duplicated once for a Wild/Wild Draw 4.

Please post your possible Color cards, including a link to the edition you are considering for the card. As captains, we have to see that the cover works for the color. You would not believe the discussion in the captain's group every year over blue & green covers!

Laura | 2892 comments Hi Team Torchwood! For those of you new to Uno, welcome! For those of you returning from previous years, welcome! I'm your team co-captain, here to help Michelle with all the little niggling details.

Please introduce yourself post your Uno shelves here for Michelle and I. This makes it much easier for us to do the checking we have to do. Also, if you haven't done so yet, please accept our friend requests. This is the easiest way I know of for checking for Reverse card books.

I'm Laura. I live in North Carolina with 5 of my kids. We moved here a few years ago while my eldest stayed with my mom in California. She is attending college/nursing school and I'm so proud of her!

The rest of us are over here getting use to much colder temperatures than we have ever been use to in our lives before. But at least that leaves more time for reading.

I've been playing Uno since the beginning. It is one team challenge I will never miss!

My shelf: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

message 12: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2892 comments And one last order of business before all the fun starts. Michelle posted a link for a tracking spreadsheet for us above. As she said, you don't have to use it. But if you do, please provide all options a book works for. And understand that at the end we may need to move things around to get everything covered.

Nicole | 241 comments Hey everyone! Excited to read with you! I'm Nicole and I live in Kansas City! I'm an ICU nurse and work night shift- so you may see me active at some bizarre times!

I read pretty much everything, though not a huge romance or non fiction reader. Love to hear recs from others!

MelanieJoy (ladybird11) | 213 comments Hi Everyone! So excited for UNO this year! I'm MelanieJoy (you can also call me Mel or Melanie if you want). I live in California with my husband, one year old son, and 2 cats. I've done UNO a few times and really enjoyed it each time.

I read a lot of genres but I avoid horror if at all possible. I'm also not a huge fan of paranormal at the moment. I read some popular fiction, some romance, some fantasy, and some young adult usually.

One of things I love about reading challenges is exchanging book recs and talking about both terrible and amazing books we've been reading.

Laura, I'm super excited to be on the same team with you again!

Excited to get to know all of you better!

Lulu (lulufritz) | 704 comments Hi everyone! I'm Lulu. I've played Uno before but it's been a few years. I mostly read romance but do branch out into other genres. I'm not a big thriller or horror reader. I enjoy talking books and love a good rec too. Super excited to be playing with you all this year!

Michelle (govmarley) | 584 comments Hello to all! I'm excited to be back and teaming up with Laura for another fun round of Uno.

I live with my husband and two kids in beautiful snowy Southern Oregon and I'm the park General Manager for Crater Lake National Park. We are in our slow season and I'm excited to read some great new books with you all over the next three months. I'll read anything for a challenge, but my favorites are mysteries of all kinds, non-fiction, and historical romances.

Like Laura said, we really need to claim the color cards first. We, as captains, need to verify the covers work for the task, and we don't want to leave those until the end of the month because they are the toughest to find.

And my Uno shelf:
https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

message 18: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (govmarley) | 584 comments Let's talk strategy!

The first books we will need to claim are the colored cards since they take some coordination - they must match color cover and the letter or number. We also need to start claiming Reverses (book previously read by a teammate), Draw 2s (these need to match 2 cards in the same hand covered by one book), and don't forget those Wild Draw 4s (duplicating a color card).
And if you have other things you must read for other challenges, let's get those claimed as well.

The key is to list everything it will also fit in the "other possible cards" column. I have listed an example in post 5 above. Laura and I will be moving books around to finish up hands, so don't stress if your book is moved from your original spot! We will find a place for it. The categories listed above should be our first priority, but also list where else it can work.

And don't forget that mid month we will have a mini challenge thrown our way, so some books could move from the main to the mini, opening up spots we hadn't completed.

It all seems complicated, but once we get rolling it all makes sense. Just ask any questions here and we will figure it out together. The color covers should be over 50%, so when in doubt, post it here and we will confer as a team.

message 19: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2892 comments Our Reverses aren't too bad this month. We only have 3, and 2 of them are in a hand with a Draw 2!

I have The Study of Magic (The Chronicles of Ixia, #2.5; The Study Chronicles Valek's Adventures, #2) by Maria V. Snyder and The Wall of Winnipeg and Me by Mariana Zapata for Green and for Blue. But both of these have V characters, so unless we really need them this month I'll save for the inevitable 7 color cards we're sure to get. I'll have a look and see what else I've got.

message 20: by Laura (last edited Jan 22, 2025 09:52PM) (new)

Laura | 2892 comments Power of the Mage (Obsidian Cove Supernatural Academy, #5) by Jarica James would work for the Blue 2.

Blue? Fighting For Them (Perpetually Broken, #3) by Kerry Taylor

Not sure how quickly my library will get copies of Bonded in Death (In Death, #60) by J.D. Robb , but I am first on the list for one of the hard copies! And that looks blue to me!

message 21: by Michelle (last edited Jan 22, 2025 09:37PM) (new)

Michelle (govmarley) | 584 comments Thoughts for blue?
S is for Silence (Kinsey Millhone, #19) by Sue Grafton (looks much more blue in real life)

Yellow enough for yellow?
The Crossing (Harry Bosch, #18; Harry Bosch Universe, #28) by Michael Connelly Death By Design 9 (Josiah Reynolds Mysteries) (Josiah Reynolds Mystery) by Abigail Keam (yellow around the edges push it over 50%?)

You know i'm dying to read my next Harry Bosch so if it's too gold I'll read it for something anyway. :)

I think S is for Silence works for Blue and The Crossing works for Yellow. I don't think Death by Design quite makes 50% yellow.

message 25: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (govmarley) | 584 comments That's what I was afraid of for Death By Design. I'll still read it though, they are fast reads.

Both yellows look good to me. Tin God is really close! Anyone else want to weigh in?

Green How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying (Dark Lord Davi, #1) by Django Wexler

Yellow The Yes Factor by Erin Spencer Thinking with Your Hands The Surprising Science Behind How Gestures Shape Our Thoughts by Susan Goldin-Meadow

I am really bad with color covers. I'm not sure about that green one.

Don't mind me. I wasn't sure about it being at least 50%, but TinEye says it's 75% green, so that one would work. :)

Jamie (little_birdie) | 45 comments Hi team Torchwood!

This is my second year in the UNO challenge, and I am thrilled to here. Can't wait for it to start!

I live just outside Oklahoma City - we just moved from the Kansas City area not too long ago to be closer to family.

My UNO shelf is here:
UNO 2025 Shelf
I love reading fantasy but really just love reading in general - so I'll try go go through my TBR soon and add some books to the spreadsheet.

message 32: by Alissa (new)

Alissa | 351 comments I've got two possible colours for now.

Clever Girl Jurassic Park (Pop Classics Book 14) by Hannah McGregor
Very nice Green 3 and just over 100 pages

The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai
Yellow 2 either with the title or a character. This book looks like it has a lot of characters so may fit elsewhere easily

Tomorrow I am heading south for a week so may not be on a lot, although I will try to check in as I am looking forward to the book chat and growing my TBR.

Of the books above, they all work except The Teller of Small Fortunes. It's close, but not quite 50% blue. The others fit great.

Jamie (little_birdie) | 45 comments Do we have a running list of which color cards have already been claimed? I'm trying to figure out what I need to request from the library :)

Also, the team I was on last year used a color checking site for anyone that needs it for book covers! I use it constantly: https://labs.tineye.com/color/

message 40: by Michelle (last edited Jan 25, 2025 03:44PM) (new)

Michelle (govmarley) | 584 comments If you all want to start claiming spots on the spreadsheet, pencil in your reads. Just be sure you list what other cards it will work for. Laura and I will move things around as we go, so don't be surprised if the book you are reading moves spots throughout the month. We will find a spot for every book you read. Just be sure to communicate if you claimed a spot and it looks like you won't finish before the month ends so we aren't scrambling the final few days. Color cards take priority! If you claim a color card, be sure it's something you can knock out this month.

Michelle (govmarley) | 584 comments Awesome! Thank you.

And welcome to everyone. Let's start reserving spots on the spreadsheet for our first reads. I am a moody reader, so I will only claim one or two at a time and see where my others might fit.
I know some of you like to plan out your reading to work with other challenges, too. Remember we have 98 cards this first round, not counting the mini challenge we will get mid-month, so we have lots of choices. Don't be shy. If you have a book you know you want to read this month that fits one of the cards, go ahead and claim it.
