I have mixed feelings on this. I have no idea what would have happened in reality, but I don't think he would have been able to keep his job, but I just don't know. As fiction, I'm glad he fought the charges, and they won't pursue it. If his medication of choice was alcohol instead of drugs, there wouldn't have been a problem.
It was that he bought drugs on the street that elevated the situation, not that he took the drugs. I think in real life, the result would be the same. His trauma stemmed from the job and he was owed consideration.
I'm glad Gonzo is fighting for his job. He was dealing with PTSD. I don't think he should be punished for this mistake. I believe he deserves one chance to get back on track.
