Right now I'm reading Fresh Water for Flowers by Valérie Perrin and it is translated from French to English. I'm liking it so far, and reading for a group read here. It's a quietly reflective novel so far.
Johannes Anyuru's They Will Drown in Their Mothers' Tears. I don't think I was aware of Anyuru's work before reading the novel, and frankly can't remember how I came across the book. It's really intense and riveting. Could perhaps be a little tighter, but definitely worth checking out.
I've read way too many Argentine books lately, so I'll highlight something different. Jamilia by Kyrgyzstan author Chingiz Aimatov. It's a novella of Soviet realism, written in Russian, about a young woman and her brother-in-law living on the steppe and working on the harvest for the war effort. It's about how she falls in love, and he becomes an artist. Really lovely, really short.
