What translated novel did you read most recently? What language was it translated from and to? How did you come across the book? Is it one you'd recommend to others in this group?

Franky | 212 comments Right now I'm reading Fresh Water for Flowers by Valérie Perrin and it is translated from French to English. I'm liking it so far, and reading for a group read here. It's a quietly reflective novel so far.

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 302 comments Johannes Anyuru's They Will Drown in Their Mothers' Tears. I don't think I was aware of Anyuru's work before reading the novel, and frankly can't remember how I came across the book.

It's really intense and riveting. Could perhaps be a little tighter, but definitely worth checking out.

Emmeline | 207 comments I've read way too many Argentine books lately, so I'll highlight something different. Jamilia by Kyrgyzstan author Chingiz Aimatov. It's a novella of Soviet realism, written in Russian, about a young woman and her brother-in-law living on the steppe and working on the harvest for the war effort. It's about how she falls in love, and he becomes an artist. Really lovely, really short.

Joy D | 16 comments I have really been enjoying The Transylvanian Trilogy by Miklós Bánffy:
https://www.goodreads.com/series/5811...

It is historical fiction that covers a wide swath of Hungarian and Romanian history. It is set in Transylvania, which was then part of Austro-Hungarian Empire and is now in Romania, and the time frame is late 19th century through the start of the Great War. The set was published in the 1930s and written by someone who lived through it.

Translated from the Hungarian by Patrick Thursfield and Katalin Banffy-Jelen.

Recently finished the second volume:
They Were Found Wanting: The Transylvanian Trilogy, Volume II by Miklós Bánffy - 4.5* - My Review

Read the first a while ago:
They Were Counted by Miklós Bánffy - 4* - My Review

And looking forward to the third and final:
They Were Divided
