E-Readers
Wrong person to ask. I've only downloaded from Amazon. Hmm... wait... I did upload an e-mail once. If it's an adobe file it shows up exactly as it did on your computer. Besides that I don't know. Mine showed up with the rest of my books and gets arranged by when I read it last.I haven't used text to speech, so I can't help you there. The size is weird for a few minutes, but then you get use to it and don't think about it again. You don't see page numbers though. It comes up as line numbers. It does show you the percentage of the book you've progressed through, so it only takes about a book for you to get over the page number issue. My only complaint is not having the back light. But, I haven't done anything fancy with mine. In fact, I buy more book books. I just have my kindle so that if I finish a book I have something there. I bought stuff for it, but then I keep reading my real books first and putting them off. I think the battery lasts about 15 hours. I just know that I've read 2 books on it before without the battery running out. I recharge everything after using it so I've never tested it to see how far I really could get.
I question for the nook readers. Does B&N let you use your discount when you download them? I've always wondered. Or, Sony, can you use Borders coupons?

I wondered that too Heather. I know here in Canada, our iRewards card doesn't work for Kobo books. :(

I've seen the Kobo before but for me the Nook has the best design, loll. The new Kindle does look nice though.

I have to admit I like the little lcd screen on the nook, but I have heard it lags a lot. It also seems kind of hard to navigate (but it's just a personal preference). I wanted a small reader, so far the Kobo is still the smallest/lightest (out of the ones I'm looking at), then the Kindle 3, then the Nook.
The Kobo doesn't tell you where you are in the book (just in the chapter), and I think this would bug me. I at least need to know I am 1/4 of the way through or whatever.

The Kobo does sound good for you, but I'd like to point out that the Nook isn't hard to navigate, loll. It's very simple and easy to use. :)

If you can't tell, I am obsessive about these things. I can't help it. It takes me 1-6 months of research before I buy a tv, laptop, or any electronic device, lol. I am very a very techie/geeky person.

I really have to get back to work instead of being obsessed with readers, lol.

Mine was a gift so I didn't have to worry. I just said I wanted a lot of books for Christmas. I got the kindle instead and they told me to buy my own dang books. =)

That's funny heather. I wouldn't complain though.
I bought a Nook today. I really like it, although it is pretty heavy. I figured I'd make sure I like the weight of it and see how comfortable it is to hold while laying down. I already rooted it, but I still have to figure out how to do the file system for good organization.

I have a Nook and LOVE it, but am sort of sad that Amazon's K3 just got announced. I had planned on getting the K3 when it came out, but figured it wouldn't be out until next year, so I got the Nook as something to have in the meantime.
Amazon is nice because you can transfer books from your previous e-reader to the newer one, which is part of why I wanted to start with the K3 and grow from there...although Nook hasn't come out with a generation 2 device yet, so this may end up being the case with them as well. If so, then I'll probably stay a Nook-er for life.
Imo you can't go wrong with either or a Nook or a Kindle. They're comparable.

Stacia, post on forums (like mobileread.com) and tell them what you want in the Nook. There are places with wish lists from customers (all it would take is a software update), and from what I was told at B&N that is how the developers decide what things to work on for new releases.

I made myself a pretty Jace wallpaper for my Nook, lol.
I did it in like 20 mins so please don't laugh, I know there are mistakes.

My favorite YA paranormal series. He's only a few years older than my son and I still think "wow he's pretty hot".
In fact, that picture comes pretty close to how I imagine Jace to look. Very nice job...

It is so hard to find a living real person to portray one of your favourite characters, but Alex Pettyfer is a pretty good Jace. I just don't know what I'll do if the movies are cast and I don't like Jace. Fingers crossed it will be somebody that embodies his personality and soul as well as his looks. :P

What did you do to change his look? At further inspection it does look like him, but somehow better...

& I just found: http://www.polyvore.com/jace_wayland_... which I am in love with! loll

That probably makes no sense...

But yeah. The Nook is too much fun. It's like a toy to me.

I ordered my first book to my nook via wifi and I finished it in 5 hrs! I have to get up in less than 3 hrs.
Stacia, I had the same problem at first when I saw pics of Alex. He looked too young, but that is because a lot of the pics are older so he is young. This is from the movie Beastly and it was just made so his looks have matured.

What you do makes a lot of sense though, LOL.
Stop it! You guys made me feel like I was neglecting my kindle so I got it out and I've bought 10 books in 2 freaking days. Sometimes the "easy button" gets you in more trouble.

The best bet is to join an actual GR group that is dedicated to your personal ereader. I'm in the Nook group, which gives out tips how to search for books.
You can do 0.00 in the search window to search for free books, or you can narrow it down to 0.00 romance, 0.00 mystery, etc.
This one was just the "Free Friday" offering, which shows up every Friday in the shop window for the Nook.

I know www.mobileread.com/forums/index.php has a sticky thread where you can find free books for your reader. Just go to your readers section and it's at the top of the page. There must be a way to search via amazon like we can with the Nook? Maybe somebody knows at a Kindle group. Or they probably have them listed there like Stacia said.
It use to be easier to find. It's there, but I have to search through all the old books most of the time.

If your library offers ebooks, see what format they have available. Most now are going to epub, which works for Sony, Nook, and Kobo (pdfs work as well). While if it's mobi, that is for Kindles. Most library's offer an online catalogue now, so it's pretty cool.
Also, I have just discovered a place called Smashwords.com, where indie and self published authors post their books. Some are free and some you have to buy (but most are relatively cheap). People rate the books as well there. They have all popular formats available for download or you can read it online.

I do look at the free ebooks every once in a while and collect them using pc apps. Not quite as cool as an actual e-reader, but it's free!

Personally, I'm not too into the Kindle as I would have to pay an extra $2 on each book that gets sent (wireless) to it. Also, it seems kind of big (although I have never held one).
I like the Nook (but again have never held one), but I can't buy books from it here in Canada. I also don't like the fact that if I side load my ebooks I have now (which are many), they don't show up in the regular library or show the covers. This can be hacked though to fix that.
The Kobo is available here and it will work great with all of my ebooks I already have. It is light weight and smaller than the previous two. The battery life is also longer. It doesn't show me what page in a book I am on though, and that would drive me nuts.
The sony I would like doesn't have enough memory for me and no expansion slot, so it is out.
I had thought that I would like a Kobo because of how light they are and battery pros. But now that I am going to states, I might look at some other options, like the Nook.
I have used my phone for almost 2 years and I love it! I use mobipocket so I can use kindle books, plus I can convert almost any file with mobipocket desktop. My screen is cracked and I would prefer to wait till I get a new phone instead of fixing it. I have always wanted a reader, but didn't really need one until now. I will actually miss the back lighting at night, but the rest of the time the e ink is great.
Edit to add Heather, can you use the 3g to download books from other places? Or only amazon? Also, if you load an ebook that you didn't get via amazon, does it show up with the rest of your books, or is it in a different location? Basically, are they treated the same as amazon books? And have you ever used the txt to speech? I was wondering if it works for non amazon books as well?
