Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments Ok, so I know a few people at the Book Addicts group have posted about their ereaders. So far most everybody there has a Nook. I know (I think) that Heather has a kindle and I would like to hear from other people that have or have used an ereader.

Personally, I'm not too into the Kindle as I would have to pay an extra $2 on each book that gets sent (wireless) to it. Also, it seems kind of big (although I have never held one).

I like the Nook (but again have never held one), but I can't buy books from it here in Canada. I also don't like the fact that if I side load my ebooks I have now (which are many), they don't show up in the regular library or show the covers. This can be hacked though to fix that.

The Kobo is available here and it will work great with all of my ebooks I already have. It is light weight and smaller than the previous two. The battery life is also longer. It doesn't show me what page in a book I am on though, and that would drive me nuts.

The sony I would like doesn't have enough memory for me and no expansion slot, so it is out.

I had thought that I would like a Kobo because of how light they are and battery pros. But now that I am going to states, I might look at some other options, like the Nook.

I have used my phone for almost 2 years and I love it! I use mobipocket so I can use kindle books, plus I can convert almost any file with mobipocket desktop. My screen is cracked and I would prefer to wait till I get a new phone instead of fixing it. I have always wanted a reader, but didn't really need one until now. I will actually miss the back lighting at night, but the rest of the time the e ink is great.

Edit to add Heather, can you use the 3g to download books from other places? Or only amazon? Also, if you load an ebook that you didn't get via amazon, does it show up with the rest of your books, or is it in a different location? Basically, are they treated the same as amazon books? And have you ever used the txt to speech? I was wondering if it works for non amazon books as well?

Wrong person to ask. I've only downloaded from Amazon. Hmm... wait... I did upload an e-mail once. If it's an adobe file it shows up exactly as it did on your computer. Besides that I don't know. Mine showed up with the rest of my books and gets arranged by when I read it last.I haven't used text to speech, so I can't help you there. The size is weird for a few minutes, but then you get use to it and don't think about it again. You don't see page numbers though. It comes up as line numbers. It does show you the percentage of the book you've progressed through, so it only takes about a book for you to get over the page number issue. My only complaint is not having the back light. But, I haven't done anything fancy with mine. In fact, I buy more book books. I just have my kindle so that if I finish a book I have something there. I bought stuff for it, but then I keep reading my real books first and putting them off. I think the battery lasts about 15 hours. I just know that I've read 2 books on it before without the battery running out. I recharge everything after using it so I've never tested it to see how far I really could get.

I question for the nook readers. Does B&N let you use your discount when you download them? I've always wondered. Or, Sony, can you use Borders coupons?

message 4: by Carrie (Care) (new)

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments Thanks Heather! The new Kindle has a 3-4 week battery and it's much smaller, so those are pluses for me. I don't know if I would use text to speech (it sounds kind of weird), but I can imagine having to do something, but wanting to continue to read... So maybe I might use it.

I wondered that too Heather. I know here in Canada, our iRewards card doesn't work for Kobo books. :(

I don't know what a Kobo is so I'm a little lost there.

message 6: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine (jadorejas94) | 950 comments For B&N coupons don't work for ebooks, unless specifically stated I believe. Most don't though.

I've seen the Kobo before but for me the Nook has the best design, loll. The new Kindle does look nice though.

message 7: by Carrie (Care) (new)

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments Kobo is through Borders. It is one of the only internationally selling readers attached to a book store. In Canada it is sold through Chapters (like B&N), and Australia and New Zealand they can buy it through their local stores (Borders and some others). It was meant to be a basic, cheap reader (now that the new cheaper Nook and kindle have come out I assume their prices will come down too). I actually really like it. It is very light and I like the quilted back (it's very comfy to hold), and I can buy it locally. The Kobo store has great prices and I have had an account for months now even though I don't have a reader (except my phone).

I have to admit I like the little lcd screen on the nook, but I have heard it lags a lot. It also seems kind of hard to navigate (but it's just a personal preference). I wanted a small reader, so far the Kobo is still the smallest/lightest (out of the ones I'm looking at), then the Kindle 3, then the Nook.

The Kobo doesn't tell you where you are in the book (just in the chapter), and I think this would bug me. I at least need to know I am 1/4 of the way through or whatever.

message 8: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine (jadorejas94) | 950 comments I think that the lagging has stopped a lot due to the updates B&N releases periodically. I heard that in the beginning it was REALLY bad, but now it's not really, IMO. Of course it might take 1-2 seconds (if that) and I don't think it's bad.

The Kobo does sound good for you, but I'd like to point out that the Nook isn't hard to navigate, loll. It's very simple and easy to use. :)

message 9: by Carrie (Care) (new)

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments I won't personally know how easy it is until this weekend! I like the way the Kobo shows all of your book covers on a shelf if you want. Sometimes I forget the name of a book or author, but remember the cover. But if I hack the nook I can make folders to organize my books (like Fae, Vampires, Shifters, YA, or whatever I want...). The Kindle will basically do the same, but it's not called folders.

If you can't tell, I am obsessive about these things. I can't help it. It takes me 1-6 months of research before I buy a tv, laptop, or any electronic device, lol. I am very a very techie/geeky person.

message 10: by Jasmine (last edited Jul 29, 2010 12:03PM) (new)

Jasmine (jadorejas94) | 950 comments Ahah, don't worry I'm the same way about the research. Seriously. When I was deciding if I should go for the Nook or Kindle I watched about 20 youtube videos about them and read about 10 articles, lol. But that's good! Then your not just wasting your money on something you're not 100% sure about!

message 11: by Carrie (Care) (new)

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments Yes! If somebody bought me one or the other as a gift I wouldn't care or complain, but to spend my own $ is another story.

I really have to get back to work instead of being obsessed with readers, lol.

message 12: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine (jadorejas94) | 950 comments OMG when I was looking for one it took over my life, LOL. I was supposed to be doing homework and I just kept watching videos on youtube instead. =x For Journalism, our final project was to create a magazine about something we liked and write articles on the subject. I chose Books as my general subject and for one of my articles I wrote about ereaders just so I could spend time researching for my own benefit during class, hehee.

message 13: by Angela (new)

Angela B I have a Nook and I love it I was interested in the Kobo but it didn't come out until after I got my Nook (it was a gift) and I actually still haven't seen one in the local Boarders store

message 14: by Heather (new)

Heather T (horrorvacui000) | 5931 comments Mod
Mine was a gift so I didn't have to worry. I just said I wanted a lot of books for Christmas. I got the kindle instead and they told me to buy my own dang books. =)

message 15: by Carrie (Care) (new)

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments Haha Jasmine, very creative!

That's funny heather. I wouldn't complain though.

I bought a Nook today. I really like it, although it is pretty heavy. I figured I'd make sure I like the weight of it and see how comfortable it is to hold while laying down. I already rooted it, but I still have to figure out how to do the file system for good organization.

message 16: by Stacia (the 2010 club) (last edited Jul 30, 2010 10:38PM) (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 827 comments For organization on Nook, I just have it set up alphabetically so I can go right to the author.

I have a Nook and LOVE it, but am sort of sad that Amazon's K3 just got announced. I had planned on getting the K3 when it came out, but figured it wouldn't be out until next year, so I got the Nook as something to have in the meantime.

Amazon is nice because you can transfer books from your previous e-reader to the newer one, which is part of why I wanted to start with the K3 and grow from there...although Nook hasn't come out with a generation 2 device yet, so this may end up being the case with them as well. If so, then I'll probably stay a Nook-er for life.

Imo you can't go wrong with either or a Nook or a Kindle. They're comparable.

message 17: by Carrie (Care) (new)

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments I want to organize everything by not only author/title (because really when you are trying to decide what to read and have 100s or 1000s of books to read, that could take forever!) but by genres and maybe some categories like vamps, fae, shifters... I haven't had any time to play with it though. Too busy visiting family.

Stacia, post on forums (like mobileread.com) and tell them what you want in the Nook. There are places with wish lists from customers (all it would take is a software update), and from what I was told at B&N that is how the developers decide what things to work on for new releases.

I made myself a pretty Jace wallpaper for my Nook, lol.

I did it in like 20 mins so please don't laugh, I know there are mistakes.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 827 comments Jace is from Mortal Instruments. (not Jace from Vincent's shifters, although I like him too!) He's the golden haired one on the first cover.
City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments, #1) by Cassandra Clare City of Ashes (The Mortal Instruments, #2) by Cassandra Clare City of Glass (The Mortal Instruments, #3) by Cassandra Clare

My favorite YA paranormal series. He's only a few years older than my son and I still think "wow he's pretty hot".

In fact, that picture comes pretty close to how I imagine Jace to look. Very nice job...

message 26: by Carrie (Care) (new)

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments Thanks! Glad you like. I am not sure if you can use your own pics on other readers, but anybody is welcome to save the pic and use it.

It is so hard to find a living real person to portray one of your favourite characters, but Alex Pettyfer is a pretty good Jace. I just don't know what I'll do if the movies are cast and I don't like Jace. Fingers crossed it will be somebody that embodies his personality and soul as well as his looks. :P

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 827 comments That's Alex Pettyfer? Wow, I never thought he was right for the movie role (you know they're making a movie right?) even though he's everyone's top pick. Maybe people were just posting the wrong pictures all along!

What did you do to change his look? At further inspection it does look like him, but somehow better...

message 28: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine (jadorejas94) | 950 comments Alex Pettyfer is the best Jace! :) I love him, LOL. I saw his picture last year I believe, when I typed in Jace Wayland in google, and I was like "O.M.G. HE'S SO PERFECT!" ahahah

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 827 comments If he looks like that in the movie, I'll keep him as Jace then. :)

message 30: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine (jadorejas94) | 950 comments If you google Jace Wayland/Alex Pettyfer, you'll find a lot of pictures where he looks perfect! My personal favorite is: http://www.flickr.com/photos/billkaul...

& I just found: http://www.polyvore.com/jace_wayland_... which I am in love with! loll

message 31: by Stacia (the 2010 club) (last edited Aug 05, 2010 09:13PM) (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 827 comments I like Carrie's pic because he somehow looks older/edgier to me. I'm not sure why it looks different, but it just looks Jace to me. He looks good in the other pictures, but not as much like Jace for some reason.

That probably makes no sense...

message 32: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine (jadorejas94) | 950 comments LOL it did, I think it's because in the picture his cheekbones are very prominent. :) I'm just in love with Alex in general, so I love all of his pictures basically, lol.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 827 comments Back on the ereader front...I really do love my Nook, but I think I'm going to treat myself to a K3 for Christmas. I want another ereader just in case B&N goes the way of Blockbuster in sales, and I'm pretty sure that Amazon is going to hold onto their king of internet books/readers title for a while.

But yeah. The Nook is too much fun. It's like a toy to me.

message 34: by Carrie (Care) (new)

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments I really like the kindle 3 from what I've read.

I ordered my first book to my nook via wifi and I finished it in 5 hrs! I have to get up in less than 3 hrs.

Stacia, I had the same problem at first when I saw pics of Alex. He looked too young, but that is because a lot of the pics are older so he is young. This is from the movie Beastly and it was just made so his looks have matured.

message 35: by Angela (new)

Angela B In Carries picture he just looks to old for the Jace I picture but no one ever fits a role wellm for me....it's just not what's in my head no matter what

message 36: by Carrie (Care) (new)

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments Nobody will ever be exactly what we picture, but I'm happy with Alex. I think I always picture the hot boys in books a little older in my head. Maybe so I don't feel like such a perv, lol. :P

message 37: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine (jadorejas94) | 950 comments ahah, I picture them around how old they usually are (16-18 is my norm), because I'm 15, going on 16, so that's perfect loll. =D

What you do makes a lot of sense though, LOL.

Heather T (horrorvacui000) | 5931 comments Mod
Stop it! You guys made me feel like I was neglecting my kindle so I got it out and I've bought 10 books in 2 freaking days. Sometimes the "easy button" gets you in more trouble.

message 39: by Carrie (Care) (new)

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments Tehehe. Some books I can't order with the Nook here in Canada, so it's not so bad for me. I try not to buy too many ebooks via B&N or Amazon anyway. A lot of kindle & Nook books have their drm on it and I want to be able to read my ebooks on any device in case sometime in the future I have another ereader.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 827 comments This one is free for Nook today and it looks interesting : fantasy mixed with PNR (and it has Merlin in the series title!).

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 827 comments I just saw in a recent GR group (but don't remember which one) a thread that linked to a site which kept all of the newest free books for Kindle listed.

The best bet is to join an actual GR group that is dedicated to your personal ereader. I'm in the Nook group, which gives out tips how to search for books.

You can do 0.00 in the search window to search for free books, or you can narrow it down to 0.00 romance, 0.00 mystery, etc.

This one was just the "Free Friday" offering, which shows up every Friday in the shop window for the Nook.

message 44: by Carrie (Care) (new)

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments I did the 0.00 search a few times and got a couple books. I did one last night actually and got Courting the Beast by R.J. Ross . I started it, and it's a little cheesy, but cute. It's a fairy tale remaking and I like those (kind of a spoof). This time the girl is turned into the Beast, and the boy has to fall in love.

I know www.mobileread.com/forums/index.php has a sticky thread where you can find free books for your reader. Just go to your readers section and it's at the top of the page. There must be a way to search via amazon like we can with the Nook? Maybe somebody knows at a Kindle group. Or they probably have them listed there like Stacia said.

message 45: by Heather (new)

Heather T (horrorvacui000) | 5931 comments Mod
It use to be easier to find. It's there, but I have to search through all the old books most of the time.

message 46: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine (jadorejas94) | 950 comments Thanks for the heads up Stacia. :) I haven't been on my Nook for a while, so I haven't checked the books for the Free Fridays since August.

message 47: by Carrie (Care) (new)

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments I just picked up another Nook for one of my friends while in the US. Because we can share books with it, it is easier than the Kindle. I just add one of my books and then I add my credit card info. I only have to do it once and we can email books to eachother. Works great.

message 48: by Sooz (new)

Sooz Malinoski (soozee) | 55 comments I don't have an e-reader yet, and am still debating. I am a huge user of the library, since I rarely want to keep a book after reading it. (Although I have the Kate Daniels series and Harry Potter) Does the Nook or Kindle have a way to re-sell the books are maybe an exchange program somewhere? That would be great if you could have a book swap site for e-readers like they do for printed books.

message 49: by Carrie (Care) (new)

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments No, not yet. The Nook lets you lend some books, but only ONCE, and only for two weeks. It's hard because they don't want people just giving the books away, which I understand. But for those of us that are always borrowing or lending books, it doesn't work well. It can be done with close friends and family though. Two of my gf's have Nooks now, and I put one of my B&N ebooks on theirs, but I had to enter the credit card number and name that was used to buy the book. Now we can all swap our books as long as we do that once for each device and card.

If your library offers ebooks, see what format they have available. Most now are going to epub, which works for Sony, Nook, and Kobo (pdfs work as well). While if it's mobi, that is for Kindles. Most library's offer an online catalogue now, so it's pretty cool.

Also, I have just discovered a place called Smashwords.com, where indie and self published authors post their books. Some are free and some you have to buy (but most are relatively cheap). People rate the books as well there. They have all popular formats available for download or you can read it online.

message 50: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) I'm with you Sooz. I love the idea of an e-reader, but I almost never buy books anymore, just get them from a library. And while my library is pretty well-stocked with the physical books, the ebooks section is weak. Plus, I just know I would spend way too much on books if I got an e-reader. They make it way too easy to buy books.

I do look at the free ebooks every once in a while and collect them using pc apps. Not quite as cool as an actual e-reader, but it's free!
