Since we are now reading the collection of short stories; The Continental Op by Dashiell Hammett I think we need a topic of the American author considered as one of the finest mystery writers of all time.

We should have linked the older OP thread with this Hammett topic.

This thread is about the author not just the specific detective

He is in print in many publishers, just order from the bookstore. Not like he is a forgotten classics author.....

From reading The Continental Op, I love Hammett's writing, it's so clear; he describes the action, gives the dialog, and let's the reader draw his/her conclusions. When he gives the characters' thoughts, he does it just enough to illuminate their minds so you know more about them and where they are coming from.
I still need to read Red Harvest (more of the Op, a character I really like) and The Maltese Falcon.

Red Harvest is one of the best novels of last century and not only because some american poll like Time Magazine top 100 novels of 1900s list.

You have so many short stories of great quality to look forward with The Op, stand alone great stories like Nightmare Town.

The Continental OP collection doesnt have the best stories of i have read of the character.

Out of curiosity, has anyone read Spade & Archer: The Prequel to Dashiell Hammett's The Maltese Falcon?

Joe Gores is respected Hammett expert. I will read that book and the book titled Hammett about Dashiell himself in a fictional story.

"He was known best for his novels and short stories set in San Francisco and featuring the fictional "Dan Kearney and Associates"[1] (the "DKA Files") private investigation firm specializing in repossessing cars, a thinly veiled escalation of his own experiences as a confidential sleuth and repo man."

Gores sounds like a Hammett, a private operator turned writer.

I saw this in a shop recently and groaned then rolled my eyes then showed it to Leah who pretty much mirrored my reaction. I'm not sure I could bring myself to read it unless it gets nothing but 5 star reviews from everyone.

“The Hunter and Other Stories” are of course old news to me who adore Hammett and frankly its the best literary news in the last decade or even more seeing there is new stories never published before by Hammett.

I have to thank the old publishers who rejected the stories in the book that isnt the action,hardcore hardboiled stories they wanted from the PI master. Cant wait to read the short stories that isnt crime stories and who deals alot with his world view, philosphy. Also the screenplays.

This was out of my price range but I wanted to get into reading short stories again so I bought Who Killed Bob Teal? I also bought Rex Stout as well.

15 including the Assistant Murder which is 70 pages.

I have the Thin Man. Read it many years ago. I'd like to read more of his novels next year.

The Thin Man is a nice experiment different than his bleak noir novels, short stories with The Op and co.

I would like The Thin Man more if i had read it today and not right after being blinded by the brilliance of Red Harvest and The Continental OP collection.
