The book is about Patrick and Justin, two best friends. Justin has a disease where he is stuck in a wheelchair and can’t do much on his own. I’ll Push You is an amazing true story that shows the real value of friendship.
I’ll Push You is a story about two young men, Patrick and Justin. Patrick and Justin have known each other ever since they were very little. Justin has a disease that makes him unable to use almost all of his body and he is in a wheelchair for the majority of his older life. As Justin gets older, his disease continues to increase in its severity, leaving Justin to rely on others for help in almost everything he does. One day, Justin tells Patrick about this idea he has to hike 500 miles in Spain, the only problem is Justin would be in a wheelchair the whole time and Patrick would have to push him. At first, Patrick is hesitant but he eventually agrees to push Justin the 500 miles in Spain. This story follows Patrick and Justin’s journey throughout their trek across Spain. Reading I’ll Push You is very easy to understand. The story switches perspectives. It switches between Patrick and Justin’s perspective. When you read this book it makes you feel as if you were actually there walking the trail with them. The characters in this book are filled with love and a desire to help others. Throughout the story, many different hikers joyfully offer to help Patrick and Justin up the trail. Patrick and Justin are very determined to get up the trail and complete their 500-mile journey within a certain time period. The book also helps you with your spiritual faith. It can help you realize that God has a purpose for everything in your life. On page 142 it says, “The truth that God’s love is more powerful than any darkness we can face.” This can help show people that God loves you and He cares for you no matter what. This book leaves me wondering about many questions, one of them being, would my best friend do something like this for me? Would I do something like this for my best friend? The authors really show the importance of friendship in this book. They show how friendship can mean so much and what true friendship is. I think that the authors do an amazing job of showing this, and not only do they show it, but they also act upon it.
The authors use “I” and “we” a lot in the text to show that this is a first-person story. The authors really put a lot of emotion into their writing, which makes the reader feel very involved in the story. The author uses such good detail in the story, that it makes you feel as if you were actually on the trail hiking or pushing with them. One powerful line that was said in the book was on page 24 when Patrick said, “I’ll push you.” This line is so significant towards the rest of the book because this is the moment that Patrick agrees to push Justin 500 miles across Spain in a wheelchair. If Patrick would’ve never said he would push Justin, then nothing in this story would have happened. The book is not structured weird or confusing like some books. Right from the start, you get introduced to the characters and each small section of the book changes perspectives. So one section it might be Patrick writing or talking to us, while the next section it will be Justin.
One thing I think this book did very well got a point across about friendship and how friends can help you through the toughest challenges in life. Reading this book can be a spiritual help for you. It can show you the power of God and it can show you how friends can help you see the kindness and beauty of God. I would really encourage people to read this, especially people who are struggling with their spiritual life or their relationships with their friends.
