“Naturally, during this time we’d play five-a-side or three-a-side in the old-fashioned gym – all polished wooden wall-bars, beams and ropes – but we also booted balls around in there as hard as we could in an impromptu game of murder ball. The medicine balls around in the gym vastly outnumbered the kids who had any idea what to do with them, so they would just get hurled at each other and things went up a danger level when basketballs started getting booted around as hard as possible. Heads were the target, heads were hit, people were floored and everyone was laughing. I remember Mr McCreadie coming in just as Sammy Martin took one full on the side of the head and went down like he’d taken a punch from Muhammad Ali. The PE teacher was all for a laugh but he arrived to see Sammy take off and land on the floor, only to get back up dazed and confused.”
