i have no words. after reading all the books for the first time this year, this one was the real kicker. it sucks that we know how it ends and we’ve seen a glimpse of this quarter quell in wow suzanne collins! just put me out of my misery, will you?

i have no words. after reading all the books for the first time this year, this one was the real kicker. it sucks that we know how it ends and we’ve seen a glimpse of this quarter quell in catching fire, but each death, each person haymitch is somewhat attached to, their fates just hit you like a punch to the gut (or an axe? idk).

this instalment in the hunger games saga just felt more pain ridden, gruesome, and darker than the rest, and i really enjoyed it! i couldn’t stop sobbing in the last two chapters + the epilogue, but that’s probably just because suzanne probably saw me lowkey thirsting over snow in 2023 and decided to take it out on one of her most beloved characters a few years later. as if it isn’t the consequence of our own actions.

the songs. the covey songs getting passed down through generations of district 12 and them being given more context in this book, wildly changes the meaning of them in the ballad of songbirds and snakes. “nothing you can take was ever worth keeping” and “the old there before” wowza i’m hurt.

ALSO EVERYTHING WE LEARN ABOUT HAYMITCH IN THIS NOVEL WILDLY CHANGES HOW WE PRECIEVE HIM IN THE ORIGINAL TRILOGY. the “sweetheart” remarks to katniss? YEAH. THATS HIS DEAD BEST FRIENDS DAUGHTER. Haymitch is such a loving, kind hearted character, his parenting and friendly nature in this book genuinely made my heart swell with sadness. Him taking care of louella, and then loulou, confining with ampert and growing close to maysilee? all made their deaths so much harder. ESPECIALLY MAYSILEE. AS SOON AS I READ “night sis” I KNEW IT WAS OVER FOR ME.
"Goodbye, Maysilee Donner, who I loathed, then grudgingly respected, then loved. Not as a sweetheart or even a friend. A sister." SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UPPPPPPPPPPPPPP.

Also Lenore Dove :( She deserved so much better. I truly thought there was still a glimmer of hope when Haymitch reunited with her after the games but nope. Suzanne Collins really makes sure there is not even a shrivel of hope left in panem. love that.

Also i’m just so glad this book exists and that Katniss wasn’t the first one to ever think about a rebellion. It would be strange in 74 years of the Hunger Games that no one else would’ve even tried so I’m glad this book proved me wrong and showed that Plutarch was loyal from the start. And Beetee and Mags and Wiress.

Also also this book made me relive the death of every single character in this franchise so thanks again suzanne collins! also that post mockingjay epilogue epilogue? yeah i’m floored.
