"In the Introduction, Bell Hooks makes the arguments that when people are talking about black people, the focus is on black men and when discussing women, the focus in white women. This leaves black women marginalized on two fronts; on the gender and racial fronts. She also makes an excellent point that scholars using the term "women" as to only address the plight of white women; this act is racist in itself." — Oct 10, 2014 01:34PM

"So far, I like the style of Wes Moore's writing, very similar to James Baldwin. He goes back and forth from the different narratives of both Wes Moores. On page 31, the Wes Moore convicted of murder discusses his life growing up and how he was an average kid, lived life using the resources/opportunities that he was given." — Aug 01, 2013 09:50AM

"I finished reading the preface, And two introductions. These parts were more for informative purposes. I felt like I was reading a lot of history/facts void of emotions, something that ethnography writing tends to do. It tries to be objective yet humanistic at the same time. I’m glad to get the background out of the way so I can immerse myself in the actual story." — Jul 20, 2018 01:06PM
