“Immerse yourself in this fascinating world and discover How Far You Can Go” are from the words of best-selling author and international expert, Lasse Rouhiainen who shared in his 2016 video presentation. His passion is helping business owners, around the world to implement the latest and the most effective social media, digital marketing, strategies and techniques. Lasse’s long list of accomplishments as a renowned speaker received the attention of Mobile World Capital, TEDx, Michelin, Ossur, top brands and institutions. Lasse is also a supporter of the Human Centered AI initiative and he is on the advisory board member of ROYBI robot, an AI-powered companion robot for young children. Lasse has given keynote presentations, seminars and workshops in more than 16 countries around the world and holds frequent conferences at several universities internationally. He has also provided training to thousands of students and businesses through online e-learning courses (Rouhiainen 2016). This well written book is summarized into five (5) engaging chapters with the focus on higher education.

“E-Learning doesn’t just “happen”! It requires careful planning and implantation” by Anonymous (Rouhiainen 2016). Chapter One - “E-learning and Online Learning Best Practices”, provide easy-to-follow steps on how to effectively run e-learning courses. It is from Lasse’s personal experience; educators can improve their teaching techniques. 21st century students are on the go, so it is important the content is accessible with mobile devices and tablets. Videos are the main form of content. It is recommended to keep them short, well-paced which hold interest and ensuring other digital tools are utilized within the videos. Try to harness the power of student feedback, measure student engagement and activity levels. Lasse cleverly shares how to understand the emotional curve of your students during the course. Educators understand how the first few weeks of school are strong and then there is a tapering off; same thing occurs with e-learning students. Lasse highlights how to effectively use e-learning, connect with students when emotional curves occur. In other words, some students fall behind, don’t see the end goal and grow weary. The benefits of electronic deadline reminders, inspirational stories, tangible creative activities and inspiring webinars are priceless to a struggling student. “Artificial intelligence is the new electricity. Just as 100 years ago electricity transformed industry after industry, artificial intelligence will now do the same” by Andrew Ng. (Rouhiainen 2016) Chapter 2 - “Artificial Intelligence and Robotics in Education”. This best-selling author has written several books and his recent 2018 published book is “Artificial Intelligence: 101 Things You Must Know Today About Our Future.” He gives his readers more insight to AI seekers. Chapter two elaborates how artificial intelligence will help students and teachers. Lasse expounds four tops ways AI can teach and train students. To be honest, the personalized learning platform captured my interest. Imagine, we can reach more students in less time and specialize in individual learning with AI tutors, personalized games and make their learning experience fun and enjoyable. Teachers the dream is soon becoming a reality. Artificial Intelligence can help with grading! And promptly identify struggling students and help educators develop quick, creative tutoring tools. Doesn’t that sound good, which means less time developing and more time facilitating instruction.

“We are making a long-term bet that immersive virtual and augmented reality will become a part of people’s daily life” by Mark Zuckerberg (Rouhiainen 2016). Chapter 3 - “Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality in Education”. “Beam me up Scotty, anyone have a headset?” I must say the benefits are numerous in education. From increased motivation, travel, career building, stronger educational experiences though simulations to more access to education of other cultures. The defects are also being worked on for improvement like: potential for motion sickness with long use and potential to lose track of real reality.

“The future belongs to those who learn more skills and combine them in creative ways" by Robert Greene (Rouhiainen 2016), Chapter 4 - “Future of Skills in Education: Ready, set, can you answer the question? Can your students answer the question, “Who are you?” What does your students have to offer? Self-awareness and self-assessment not only can help to improve us educators, students can start understanding their value, worth and potential. Lasse has a unique way to identify the internal core by using SWOT (strength, weaknesses, opportunities) within specific areas of their lives. This chapter is a very good review for some and uncovering for others of their full potential through emotional, social and interpersonal intelligence.

“Only half of what you hear is true. Learning is to discover that, and then to ignore the rest” by Pasi Sahiberg (Rouhiainen 2016). Chapter 5 - “Final Notes”. It is important to reflect on your work and this reading. Questions to ponder: Was this reading worth my time? Did you learn from this author? Besides Lasse navigating the reader through higher learning expectations, he comes from a strong foundation. He is a native of Finland. He is a recipient of the academic reform. “Finland is one the countries that is well-known for having innovative and effective school systems”.

This enjoyable, easy-to-read book will lead you to a deeper understanding about higher education. This authors intent and aim is to encourage you the reader, the educator to think higher, to trust your gut, to pursue out-the-box thinking and be open to what new technology has to offer. There’s an educational shift. Be a part to help equip students for a future that looks different from ours.
