And while the exact subject isn't even something I can relate to, the feeling of being lost, and the desperate need to save the people you love is definitely something I know a thing or two about.

It's depressing to think about how true some of the events are. How many people are on the streets or on the run from whoever because of one type of addiction or another. And it pays to be kind, even just a smile and kind word does a lot for someone.

Unfortunately relapse is sometimes a part of someone's recovery journey, and no one's recovery looks the same, nor is it a linear path. But one thing this book shows exceptionally well is how important it is not to give up on the person you love, even if their addiction has changed them. Sometimes all it takes is a bit of love, a bit of compassion, and open communication from everyone about their needs.

There's one particular thing that someone said in it that's kinda bothering me. One of the people at the outpatient centre said that it's her daughter's 9th time in recovery, and she said 'there's no saving this. There's only waiting until it's over.' And when I read that I just thought, no. That's not true. Because yes, drug addiction is dangerous, and it can easily go wrong. But what addiction can't. Recovery from any addiction is a fucking hard thing to go through, whether it's the first time or the 50th. Recovery doesn't get easier however many times you go through the process.
But that doesn't mean you stop trying. It means you fucking try harder. You lean on the people you have to lean on. You take the support you have. And use your coping strategies. And fucking fight for it. Because at the end of the day, a life in an addiction isn't a life. It's a survival until death. And that mother might be having a hard time watching her kid go through it time and again, but saying that she's beyond saving, and that she's just waiting for it to be over isn't a healthy mindset for the parent, but it also isn't a healthy environment for that kid to be trying to recover in either. ...more "
