“shall work” with “you shall not work on the seventh day,”21 it refers to the work that built the holy Sanctuary. By equating our weekday work with the building of the Sanctuary – and with God’s own creation of the universe – the Torah implies that even seemingly mundane activities have Divine purpose. We create our world by transforming it into a place of meaning and Godliness.22 This is the message of Shabbat and its definition of “work,” as it teaches us how broad our mission is – and how we can transform the world into a sanctuary of meaning.”
