But I have.. many thoughts about this promising finale that ended up crashing and burning. So spoilers for Book 4 but also spoilers for other books in the series as well.

So my main issue with this book is that the amazing, incredible, and truly excellent cliffhanger set up at the end of Book 3 turned out to be... FAKE. Everything about the cliffhanger turned out not to be true, and I feel cheated by it. It would have been SO GOOD to see Hades get out of this massive hole James had accidentally written her into in her excitement at writing a really good cliffhanger... Only for her to figure out 'shit, I don't know how I'm possibly going to do this', so everything was a lie.

And the climax of Book 4 was incredibly lacklustre. We didn't see any of the planning and scheming. We didn't see Hades et al outwit or outsmart the bad guy. We didn't see them use their love for each other, their combined strength as a group, or their willpower and tenacity. It was simply 'invite the bad guy to an event and have him arrested'. Literally anyone could have done it, so why was this story about Hades? The head cop said Hades had provided them with lots of evidence, but when?? What is the point of writing a book if we never see any of the stuff that goes into beating the bad guy?

(By the way, I know the answer. The answer is the smut. I thought I was getting a good plot as well as smut, but no. This book series is clearly about the sex. And that's OK! It really is. It just wasn't what I expected.)

Tate James likes to do this thing where something important has already happened previously and off page, and Hades will refer to it in the past tense as, "Last week I had this super important conversation and set the plan in motion" but we never got to see ANY of it. And I noticed this happened a LOT over the Hades books. Almost like James was writing the books so quickly that she forgot to go back and add in these bits we as readers should have seen, so we only get vague references to important things that happened at some point in the past. It was disappointing.

And I am extra disappointed with Book 4, because the book started so well, the middle part was going great, then it turned into too much sex and not enough plot. Again, I'm not pearl clutching, and lots of readers will like this for the graphic on page sex, but I'm disappointed not only that it took precedence over the plot to the point where half the story wasn't even told, but also that the sex turned Hades into this needy, submissive wimp.

And to be honest, she wasn't that badass to begin with. She's supposed to be ruthless and smart and run this massive empire, and yes we see her casually kill people and then have sex next to their cooling bodies, but I just never got the impression Hades even knew what she was doing when it came to business, even illegal business. She was coddled too much by her men who took care of everything for her, and bossed around too much to ever convince me she was a badass boss bitch. Sure, she showed up when her business was going up in flames, but Zed ALWAYS handled everything (off-page, I might add), and then Lucas was brought in to take over business stuff (also off-page!). Does Hades even know how to run a business or is she just a figurehead?

Hades even referenced how she hated feeling like a damsel, but we never saw her do any work on her empire apart from one scene in the first book where she reads some reports: everyone else made choices and decisions for her, and she was super happy to be thrown around, manhandled, raped (because her men liked to wake her up already having sex and she can't possibly consent to that, or if there was some kind of agreement that it was OK for the guys to do that while she was sleeping, we NEVER saw it), told what to do, be yelled at, and all sorts of things that really take away her agency as a badass boss bitch of an entire criminal empire. Also, I liked Cass to start with, but he turned into a overly dominant controlling dick which I know a ton of RH readers will love, but I did not, and I went in already feeling pretty good about Cass (due to the Madison Kate books) and ended up not liking him. I think what James was attempting to do was show that Hades is a badass in the real world but wants someone else to take control in the bedroom, but it just didn't vibe, because Hades never demonstrated competency with running her 'criminal empire'. I will continue to read Tate James because the audiobooks are duet narrated, which is my new favourite type of narration and relatively hard to find. But I'm going in knowing the books are mainly there to deliver smut to readers, not plot. ...more "
