No one warned you that having children reduced you right down to some smaller, rudimentary, primitive version of yourself, where your talents and your education and your achievements meant nothing.
When you have your first child later in life, I think the identity crisis you face is magnified. You search for yourself and spend decades figuring out who you are. You think you know exactly who you’re seeing in the mirror. Then, pregnancy and mom life completely rewrite your life and suddenly you don’t have any clue what you’re seeing in the mirror any more. No one warns you how different the stages of mom life are when you’re in your 40s vs your 20s or 30s. This is a real thing thats given me serious pause— every talent, achievement, degree, award, whatever have amounted to nothing post partum. I’ve had to suffer a crisis in order to redefine myself. And these characters, they are suffering a crisis not redefine themselves, but to discover themselves. When you rate a book, you’ve got to understand a lot more than basic elements of novel writing. This insight really made the book for me.
