It has been a long time since I have enjoyed reading a set of novels as much as I am enjoying reading the Rivers of London series -- excellent plotting, dialogue and characterisation, with an exceptionally playful use of language. Regularly, while reading, I laugh out loud at the inventiveness of it all, such as a Cockney copper describing a behind-the-scenes deal as 'a couple of quid for our quo pro. The books have been described elsewhere as 'What would happen if Harry Potter had grown up and joined the London Metropolitan Police' -- its a good comparison, but I am tearing through each of these magical, multicultural masterpieces and a faster rate than I did when reading about Hogworths, which is knowingly referenced as a fictional creation by our narrator PC Grant. Strongly recommended.
“Seanabhean is ea mise anois go bhfuil cos léi insan uaigh is an chos eile ar a bruach. Is mó bogradh is cruatan curtha agam díom ón gcéad lá do saolaíodh me go dtí an lá atá inniu ann. Dá mbeadh ’fhios agam go mbeadh a leath, ná a thrian, i ndán dom ní bheadh mo chroí ná m’intinn chomh haerach ná chomh misníúil is do bhí i dtosach mo shaoil.”
