Pound by pound, this is the most visually engaging and occasionally repulsive book I've ever read. Another factor is the breadth of the mythology. My assumption is that this manga has been running for nearly 18 years, and the tale has only become more complicated. The story opens with a mysterious lone wandering into a town, followed by the action. Right away, the sight was bleak, dreary, and gruesome. Guts, the lone wolf, is said to be on a quest to assassinate an evildoer. There were elements of the supernatural, horror, and dark fantasy. Explicit cruelty was expressed courageously in the tale and artwork. The artwork is superb. The stunning details perfectly capture the tone of the story. I enjoyed how Guts' trip is dark and foggy because he is a cruel and skilled fighter with a tragic history, which the author foreshadows vividly....more
