The other night at dinner, my partner was getting more and more frustrated at our little sweetie’s antics while eating (or more accurately refusing to eat). I remembered what I had read earlier that day- a misbehaving child is ready for more responsibilities. So, I reached over, picked up a piece of fish, and put it in the little guy’s hand. Did he throw it on the floor like I expected? No! Straight to his mouth. Before reading this book, I would have assumed he was full, or didn’t like the food. Although both of those could easily have been true, it turns out he just didn’t want us to jam a spoon in his mouth anymore- he felt ready to feed himself.

I have really appreciated other parenting books such as Good Inside and The Whole-Brained Child, but this book took some of the same knowledge in those other books and made it seem more… real. Accessible. Like a best friend who has the same thought process as you do. Thank you, Michaeleen. I feel as though we are on a first-name basis.

In the interest of writing a balanced review, there was one thing that kept coming up in the book that causes me to pause, and that is using language like “big girl”. It could be used to describe a privilege being granted to a deserving child behaving at a higher maturing level, but at times it also seemed a little shame-y. I admit to being overly cautious about applying shame in parenting, and there are a few techniques mentioned in this book that seem to toe that line a little too closely for my comfort, though of course context and tone also play a part.

I am so excited to have the knowledge about how to quash power struggles before they start, how to support the growth of self-confidence, and how to have some fun while doing it. Now, the hard part: to put it into Practice. Practice. Practice. ...more "
