"So far, this book is interesting. The first chapters are about the trials, tribulations and successes of the people working for the red wolf program, as well as some of the wolves themselves. Chapter seven is covering the people living in the Ablemarle and their perceptions of the wolves and the recovery program." — Dec 03, 2021 07:24PM

"I picked this one up to skim while waiting and ended up reading the first 18 pages.
I have only one peeve so far. The author seems knowledgeable, but falls for the "superiority of modern ways." Old (shamanism, magic, etc) = emotional, superstitious, not much to offer. New (from the Renaissance on) = rational, superior, the one true way." — Sep 24, 2021 12:19PM

“Autumn lingered on as if fond of its own perfection.”

“Fat Charlie went back to his hotel room, the colour of underwater, where his lime sat, like a small green Buddha, on the countertop.
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.”

“So, yeah, my people figured that maybe there's something at the back of it all, a creator, a great spirit, and so we say thank you to it, because it's always good to say thank you. But we never built churches. We didn't need to. The land was the church. The land was the religion. The land was older and wiser than the people who walked on it.”

“Let me through – I’m a doctor.’ My heart beat a little faster, and I lingered just long enough to be sure he’d used the indefinite article. But the man was short and bald and rather ugly – not at all like any Doctor I’d consult. I hope. If ‘consult’ is the right word.”

“Just a quick glimpse to assure myself that everything was buttoned and unbuttoned in the best places and pointing in the right direction.”
