I remember reading this book in elementary school and absolutely loving it; what kid doesn't wish they could read their favorite characters right off the pages of books? Re-reading it as an adult wasn't a disappointment. I have always been a firm believer in not censoring what young people read...if they are mature enough to understand the material, they should be allowed to read it, no matter what age group the intended audience was. Along those same lines, I don't think adults should discriminate against books written for younger readers, or they will miss out on some true gems (Harry Potter is a case in point). Sometimes, we as adults need to escape to the magical worlds so much more prevalent in young adult fiction, and "Inkheart" is a great opportunity to do that.

The premise of the book is a young girl being raised by her bookbinding father after her mother "went away" 9 years ago. We later come to find out her father has the incredible ability to read characters right out of the pages of books...with the severe consequence of exchanging someone from our world for those characters. Meggie's mother was read into "Inkheart" and the characters Dustfinger and Capricorn were read out.

Dustfinger is an incredible street performer, especially with regards to fire, who has a pet marten. He was by far my favorite character, and I wanted much more of him (hopefully in the next 2 books that will happen!). My heart broke for him with regards to how much he wanted to return to his own world; I probably wouldn't want to live here after experiencing fairies and magic either. The woman he loves is later revealed to be Meggie's mother, who of course doesn't return his affections and happily returns to her husband after years of separation, so I can only hope for some romance in his future as well.

Capricorn is the ultimate villain, who hunts Mo down years later to read him some money and a horrendous monster from other books. While some of the scenes in his dungeons seemed to drag on, I loved how the characters creatively used the author to re-write Capricorn's story and produce a happy ending.

Meggie's book loving Aunt Elinor was another favorite character-I could totally see myself becoming this crazy old lady!

This was really just a super fun read, and it brought back a lot of childhood memories. I am excited to continue on with the other books in the series I haven't read yet, and will be spending the next few days pretending to be a kid again. ...more "
