“It’s hard when being Native means different things depending on who’s asking and why,” he says. “And to some people, you’ll never be Native enough,” I add. “Yeah. It’s your identity, but it gets defined or controlled by other people.”
This exchange spoke to me pretty deeply. Being a pale-skinned, Native-raised woman, it's hard to hear that there are people who just don't believe me when I talk about my heritage or the culture I was raised in. It's also hard to know that not having 'enough' blood means I'll never be considered an 'official' Native woman. And yet that is what's in my heart and soul. Being around a fire and stomping out prayers; giving thanks to the spirits that give to us to survive, and the sense of warmth and belonging that comes with being among my people as we come together in ceremony.
