I have been a huge fan of this series and V. E. Schwab since I was a teenager and this continuation of one of my beloved fantasy series growing up not only met my expectations, it exceeded them!

Schwab's writing is as delectable as ever. The pacing, new introductions, and larger complexities within the original set of characters were all done tastefully. I find the editing and medium-pacing style of this series to be gradually rewarding and addicting (one of my favorite qualities of this genre and this author in particular). I had such a time reading this, it reminded me so much of why and how I fell in love with the fantasy genre. V. E. Schwab you absolute mastermind! I cannot wait for the next installations of this series.

***Spoiler Review:

I am obsessed with how Schwab wrote the original set of characters in the light of dealing with the repercussions of their actions and traumas (both physical and mental) throughout the past seven years since the last installment. This especially comes out with Kell and Rhy, both as individuals and as the roles they play for different people/situations. I appreciated the conversations about identity, disability, and power, and how recovery is not linear and consistent, but a process. This touched a lot on how your self-worth does not only come from your abilities but from you as a person, which I thought was a compelling take on the Kell/Rhy parallels.

Also, it was such a lovely twist for what happened with Rhy and Alucard as well, that had me in my bag. Lila was as vivacious as ever, and I missed her perspective a lot, so I was grateful to spend so much time with her. I respected how Schwab wrote her dynamic with Kell, I found it to be refreshing and mature, instead of falling flat or redundant.

I also found the newer characters to be dynamic and a pleasant addition to the storyline, without overwhelming previous relationships with the original set, which definitely was something I was hesitant to be on board about, but I was very impressed with the interwoven plots. The continuation of White London, and the ghost of Holland, was fascinating to me, I am eager to see how this will play out.

Also randomly, after reading the entire book, I really do appreciate the cover choice for the new series. At first, I was upset because of how iconic the original covers are, but I do appreciate the change because it helped me conceptualize the newer powers we are shown in this installment, so I thought that was neat.

Overall, an easy 5/5 rating from me. I love this series so much. I have missed the thrill of a good fantasy series, it has been a minute. But, this was definitely worth the wait!
