This was my first Sanderson book that I ever read, cover to cover and wow (I'm repeating that, aren't I?) it I promised myself that I would write a review for this book and here I am writing that review and what can I say; this book was a great book. This was my first Sanderson book that I ever read, cover to cover and wow (I'm repeating that, aren't I?) it was great. It had its own intricate magic system (which I've heard that the author is great at creating those), great plot, and amazing characters.

*Spoilers*.

Worldbuilding.

I'm starting with this one because it's obviously one of the main selling points to the whole book series and the author has probably done a lot of worldbuilding.

This book shows that you can intergrate worldbuilding in a way that feels natural. We get a crash - course with the first sub - magic system in the prolouge, which is one of my favorite parts. (But please don't read this book just because I said so; many people are probably turned off by that part). The author shows us that Stormlight is a pretty big part of Roshar and uses it in cool ways, like giving (at least Alethkar) glowing money (which I really envy). He tells us about Spren and show us their mystique to the peoples of Roshar, giving us flashbacks and interludes talking about them. There's also science in this world except its the science of MAGIC, which gives us fabrials and other cool stuff. He also gives us the Horneater named Rock (not Dwayne Johnson, by the way) who tells us all about his culture. All of this is included and MORE.

Wow, I've been rambling on, haven't I?

Anyway, to the next pillar of this legendary book.

Characters/Tone.

I've heard that characters were Mr. Sanderson's original focus, but, wow, does he do good with them. By the way, I'm going to focus on Kaladin as he's obviously the author's charecter focus, as I call it.

He gives us flashbacks into Kaladin's character (whom I feel is the best character partially because of this) and fleshes out his motivations, gives him a former love interest, and an arc. Oh, that arc. Let's talk about that arc. Kaladin, when we meet him after being enslaved, he is a man losing hope, a "wretch" as he later says. He keeps on going down that path, losing hope, gaining depression. He even gets close to committing suicide but his spren, Syl, stops him. His charecter goes a major reverse route after this and his main focus become his comrades, Bridge Four. He is already their leader technically (though not, I think, origanally, his choice) and now he becomes one emotionally. Recovered from his depression, his main hope now is to save his men, however large the costs are for him. His other charecters are great, particulary Dalinar, but as they aren't the focus of the first book, I'm not going to talk about them right here as much as Kaladin.

Plot.

This is going to be a hard one. This story has a lot of it, though it goes slowly. I'm going to say that it almost fails when it comes to the climax. I don't like climaxes that come out of nowhere and this one (partially) felt like one. I like when they are built up throughout the book, not just thrown in there because the author's like 'Oh, no, I forgot my climax; let's just add one in here!' Somehow, Sanderson was able to pull this off, even though the climax really was just one bigger battle than the last one. But the rest of the book, well it was plotted expertly. I just love how it all went and it had a lot of plot, some flash - bangs, and some slow moments where the charecters would just sit down and talk.

So, in conclusion, I really liked this book. This was my first real venture into Sanderson where I read the whole book and wow did it pull me in. Probably not the best place to start for new readers, though. ...more "
