“W moim kraju nie ma nędzy. Mało kto żebrze na rogach ulic, a jeśli to robi, to jakoś bez przekonania, bez tej siły wewnętrznej, bez tych praw moralnych właściwych prawidłowemu żebractwu. Nasza nędza współczesna jest przezroczysta jak szkło i niewidzialna jak powietrze. Nasza nędza to kilometrowe ogonki, to nieustanny tłok łokci, to złośliwy urzędnik, to spóźniony bez powodu pociąg, to odcięta przez fatalne siły woda, czyli brak wody, to zamknięty nieoczekiwanie sklep, to rozwścieczony sąsiad, to kłamliwa gazeta i wielogodzinne przemówienie w telewizji zamiast transmisji sportowej, to przymus należenia do partii, to zepsuta pralka sprzedana w państwowym magazynie, to specjalne sklepy, w których możesz sobie coś kupić za dolary, to monotonia życia bez żadnej nadziei, to rozpadające się miasta historyczne, to pustynniejące województwa i zatrute rzeki.
