While this sequel is quite different from the first book in terms of plot or action, the author shines in her ability to not only keep the reader’s interest but also to write several characters’ developments flawlessly. From the trauma and trauma responses to the perseverance and determination to build her own life, Abby’s whole world takes the darkest turn, and watching her come back from her lowest point was so inspiring and really brought the reader closer to her. I felt that I was truly in her shoes and rooting for her to succeed and just be happy.

The author also tackles other themes like the drive to live how we want with who we want, how to better ourselves, how to persevere when in tough spots, how powerful expression through art and community is, parenthood and it’s many trials and lessons, and most of all forgiveness and how freeing it is.

While the MCs are separated for a good chunk of the novel, it doesn’t negatively affect the overall story or interest in the narrator’s journey, which is rare for me to find in a romance. North also had the genius idea of still keeping the other MC present in the story in the form of a hopeful imagination. When Abby is at her most vulnerable, like when she’s struggling, wishing for help, or when she’s sad, scared, or lost, Joey’s imaginary presence gives her the advice and motivation to move forward and do her best. I loved this inclusion, as it not only kept the MCs connected, but also helped the reader persevere as well when we missed Joey most. Their reunion is a masterclass in sapphic tension and how to break it in a second chance romance, and the overall ending ties every plot and character together in a happy, beautiful, colorful, full circle ribbon. I wish I could live in Bloom Town.

All in all, I cried all the happy tears for all the reasons, and I’m just so glad I finally decided to read this series; it’s impacted me immensely in that I can’t stop thinking about it and frequently reread certain parts of it just to relive my first experience. I couldn’t recommend this more to any/all sapphic readers. ...more "
