This is why she rewrote so obsessively. This is why she pushed to reshoot so many times. Because if something isn’t finished, it can never really be judged. You’ll never have to reckon with the fact that maybe it—and you—didn’t live up to your expectations.

A veces pienso que no sabemos la suerte que tenemos con toda esta tecnología a nuestro alcance. ¿Y para qué la usamos? Para poner verde a una serie de personas que no conocemos. Para escondernos tras un perfil falso y hacer daño. Para insultar gratuitamente sin saber las consecuencias de nuestras palabras. En TikTok e Instagram la gente crea contenido porque le gusta, porque entretiene o simplemente porque le apetece. ¿Qué razones tenemos para acribillar a alguien, a su trabajo, a su manera de ser o de bailar? Es increíble, pero la empatía brilla por su ausencia.”

Look, I get it. Tampons are embarrassing. Periods are embarrassing. (...) The whole specific business with the bleeding, though, is still not cool, except in certain woke corners of the internet. (...)
But it’s weird to have Dr. Guinn tell me how embarrassing periods are. The man has never had one in his life—why does he get to have an opinion about it?
“Could it be,” I say, in as conciliatory a tone as I can manage, “that maybe it’s not an environment where everyone feels comfortable . . . if we’re not allowed to talk publicly about something that is a normal, healthy part of life for every menstruating student and teacher at Willoughby?”
